View Full Version : New Class Creation Video

I've created a video showing how to create a new class using Fantasy Grounds.

You can view it here. (https://youtu.be/rV0vH1eeUZM)

If you'd like to see more videos (assuming you understand what I'm saying) I'm open to suggestions on the kinds of things you'd like to see.

Added another video which shows how to add the spellcasting ability to various class types and also shows how to add an archetype to an existing class.

Link here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41iLqYUGH34).

Good video. I would comment on the class design itself, but that's not the purpose of the video.

It doesn't fall in line with the format of the PHB, but it could be mentioned that making a set of features at zero-level and linking them to another feature will allow the player to make a choice by dragging the subfeature they choose onto their character sheet. Some people designing classes might prefer this to having a single feature that lists out multiple choices (like Fighting Style) and requiring the player to note somewhere which choice they made.

Can't think of anything else for you to make a video of; I think you covered all the complexity in the new FG asset creation (until a reference manual can be made in-program).

This series of videos is really great. I appreciate the Scottish theme. I hope you'll be running a game at FG Con with these classes, races, and backgrounds!

Keep them up, they're really good!!

Oh gods, a whole party of highlanders... How quickly do you think the party would wipe? Might not finish the session.

Again, well made and easy to follow. I like that you just dive into the tutorial rather than spend a lot of time in preamble mode.

I'm also very jealous at how smooth your UI behaves. I've reported in another thread my own struggles with the UI performance. It would easily take me 3x the time to perform the same editing tasks you did because every mouse and keyboard action I take comes with a 1-2 second lag. I am not posting this to troubleshoot this issue here (that's what the other thread is for :)), but I would be interested in your gear specs. I'm considering just building a new machine that is better suited for gaming but I don't want to get something that still doesn't work.

Here's something that would probably work okay. (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/415314-hex-gear-r40-engineering-station-final-pics-on-page-5/)

Actually more advanced machines can be more problematical because FG is a single thread 32 bit application - so in this case more power isn't necessarily the solution. But anyway mine is an 17-6700k CPU running at 4Gh, 16Gb RAM, running Win 10 with a Gforce GTX 1080

GREAT video, thank you for the tutorials! My only thing is you are so quiet, i have my sound all the way up and can barely hear you, but i get a message or any other sound and it blows out my speakers. i actually notice that in a lot of the tutorials, its almost like you guys are whispering, or afraid of bothering the person in the room with you, which is really unfortunate because you say some great things

Hmm, I fear you are the one with the problem somewhere. Have you turned up the sound on the video itself?

Nickademus

Actually, this video had a lower volume than your others. I bounced on YouTube between two (YouTube volume didn't change) and there was a vast difference.

yes i had to turn my PC volume from 30 to 100 on your video and any other video played immediately after was "blowing speakers" loud. youtube volume stayed at full the entire time

Ok I have a problem and am kinda stuck. When I create the the new class tab the only field I see is the hit dice tab. Under first level prof tab there is nothing for armor, skills, weapons ETC. What am I doing wrong and how do I get them?

Zacchaeus
March 7th, 2017, 23:04
Are you using any extensions? If so can you try in a new campaign without them. If you still have a problem can you check your ruleset folder for any folders that should not be there or any .tmp files. If so delete them and try again. If none of these things work report back.

Baddaawg
March 7th, 2017, 23:23
Ok I started a new test campaign. I also looked in my ruleset folder and found no folders or .tmp files .

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like.

I have exact same issue. No .tmp files and tried a fresh new test campaign, no luck. Same issue as above.

What happens when you click on the red edit buttons? I'm on v 3.3 so it's very possible that things have been updated and what you are seeing is the previous version. I may have published that video too soon

Nickademus

All it does is create a blank entry. There is no label on the entry. The test version probably changed it.

Just to encourage my laziness in not having to roll back to live - are you saying that in the current live version it doesn't work (as the posters above are illustrating) but on test it works as per my video?

I assume so. Those of us stating we are using version 3.2.3 are seeing the posted UI. You are seeing the UI from your video. Someone else running live would have to verify that they see the typed entries to confirm.

Par5e is not really that bad bud. I was intimidated also but jumped in and it took a bit, but once you figure it out you realize it was not all that bad!

Yeah, I'm still getting used to the software so probably playing with the controls too much. Also what sounds like a decent volume on my computer doesn't apparently translate when the video is posted.

Ok I have another question. At about 1:25 you start creating a table for the highlander features and it is clear you are using a hot key to do so. What is it lol? I feel like it is something I should know but I am drawing a blank.

How do we implement spellcasting and spell slots?

Hi mentorstrophy welcome to FG.

Include an ability of Spellcasting. If the class is a full spellcaster then include it as a level 1 ability; if it is a half caster include it at 2nd level or higher and if it's a 1/3rd caster then include it in an archetype. Fantasy grounds will pick up on this and will allocate the correct number of spell slots

Zacchaeus

Added another video linked in the first post which covers spellcasting ability and adding archetypes to an existing class.

So, I just get stuck right at the very start. I don't know if it's because they changed how things work in general, or if it's because I installed FGU and things are different, but even in FGC it's completely different. I currently only have the free/Demo version of FGU, but I have a Standard license of FGC, and from what I can tell it's functionally identical in layout. So, my problem is, instead of that nice menu you get when you hit Library, all I'm getting is a list of modules to pick from.

For clarification, this is what you get when you hit the Library button:
44740

vs. what I get when I hit it:
44741

(Note that your library pic was actually taken from your Create a Race vid, but I'm having problems with both.)

And I just don't know what I'm doing wrong or how I can fix it. Any ideas? I created a campaign using D&D5E ruleset and I'm trying from there, and my entire sidebar looks entirely different (and also different from when I was playing last year, which was basically how yours looked). Again, I dont' know if this is an FGC>FGU thing, but I have the same results in both (Standard) FGC and (Demo) FGU.

Out of curiosity, if I wanted to create a subclass of an existing PHB class (Barbarian subclass), would this video help with this?

Subclasses are covered quite well in this video! They are just referred to as specializations instead of subclass in the video.

So this does not work with the wizard.
It will not give me specialisation options when I reach 3th level. It does so when I just drag and drop the class on the character sheet to level up.
Did I do something wrong, or is it a known issue?

Zacchaeus
December 25th, 2021, 14:13
Do you mean in a homebrew class or an official class? The Wizard is only guaranteed to work with official material but I think it should work with homebrew stuff if that is all you have open (in other words you don't mix homebrew with official stuff). But without further details it's hard to say.

Also this thread is about creating classes. If you are seeing issues with the wizard report them here https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?60435-5E-Character-Wizard-Bug-Reports-(2020)
