Can anyone recommend mapmaking programs / decent image editing programs that are freeware? I'm a student and really broke but want to support the gaming community by not pirating their stuff... I'm saving up for cc2 pro, but it's all pocket change in a jar at the moment! :)

For editing you can use Gimp. Its free and I've used it a bit. Does what I need it to do (crop and resize images).

When it comes to free mapmaking - dungeoncrafter (https://www.dungeoncrafter.com/), autorealm (https://www.gryc.ws/autorealm.htm), and dungeonforge (https://www.dungeonforge.com) are some alternatives.

and older games with map editors usually come cheap.
Civilization 2 (worldmaps)
Heroes of Might & Magic X (Regional Maps)
Age of Mythology (Regional Maps)
Neverwinter Nights (Floorplans, Dungeons & Villages)
And there are problably alot more out there. There are usually very easy to use, but lack the flexibility of a mapping app. I still havent seen a game map editor with a grpahic format export feature, so screen captures will have to do.

Elder Scrolls 2 has a really nice, fully 3D one as well. Pretty good learning curve if you are new to 3D though.

Well, of the three, I think dungeon crafter seems to be the easiest to use and looks pretty nice too... thanks for the advice!
Gimp is also working well for me, I appreciate you all pointing me in the right direction!
Now I just need to do some xml reading and I'll be dangerous :)

The dungeoncrafter link appears to be broken.

I've used dungeoncrafter, great simple and free program. Course, don't know why the website is down now...
*uses dundjinni now, more expensive, but dang worth it :) *

I think Dungeon Crafter is dead. But isn't DungeonForge picking up where it left off?

And don't forget, you can always go to the dundjinni.com site and even if you don't purchase the program, you can still get gigabytes worth of objects, walls, floor textures, etc. for free!
