I have been having a craving for doing Battle tech over FG and although I can run it using whatever system (just for map and watching rolls) I was wondering if there is any thought or desire to create a battle tech ruleset for Fantasy grounds?

FG is more of a RPG VTT. It's not really suited for doing board games / war games.
My suggestion is VASSAL - there is a BattleTech module for it already: https://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:BattleTech
I use it for playing ASL online (if anyone wants to play ASL, PM me...)

Click the "main page" link on the vassal page I provided, and follow the "getting started" guide.

I'm sure you could do it. I would look to MoreCore Ruleset before building a custom ruleset. You can do hex maps, you will have to setup custom NPC records and Character sheets, not sure the extensibility of MOreCore in that regards. That might require an extension or ruleset.

There is a Battletech RPG though. Battletech: A Time of War from Catalyst Game Labs. Quick Start Rules (QSR) PDF (https://catalystgamelabs.com/download/Free%20PDFs/ATOW%20QSR.pdf) available here.
Even then, someone would need to either make a ruleset (there may be an old community ruleset for something Battletech-ish but who knows if it's still supported or still works under FG 3.2x) or an extension to the MoreCore ruleset.
However, as someone already mentioned, Fantasy Grounds is a VTT for RPGs. If you're looking to play Battletech the miniatures boardgame I'd recommend using a tool suited to that task.

A ruleset for Battletech's RPG module called 'A Time of War' would certainly be possible with FG.
The miniatures wargame would be a lot harder I reckon. Apart from VASSAL there already is an open source program in development -and has been for quite a while- that captures the spirit of the wargame quite well; Megamek.
Get it over at megamek.org. There's even a (simple) AI to play against and a community ruleset to make playing against the AI even more fun: https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=41494.0
Still, I would really like AToW module for FG as well.

I think FG could do both really. Your mech would be your character sheet (if you went pure Tactical game) however its the Mechwarrior RPG that im looking to play. I have just imported the Mech record sheet as a jpeg and share it so that as dmg is done to the mech during times of the tactical game you could mark off what happens to the mech on the "image"

It could, but currently FG doesn't excel in the boardgame/wargame genre. As for the RPG Mechwarrior aspect, again I would refer you to MoreCore. I know it has a huge number of dice mechanics and if something is missing I suspect if you ask nicely it would be added. Also I know customizing the character sheets is also something that it is setup to do.
From time to time, their is some interest (including mine) in Mechwarrior, but I have yet to see anyone see this through. Maybe with the new MoreCore someone will take it upon themselves to get this going.

Now I have the urge to break out my Battletech 3050 and 3055 and reminisce. I'd be very interested if someone did put together this ruleset. I would volunteer but I already have my hands full with the Swords & Wizardry ruleset.
