can not edit npcs

new to fg so hopefully i am just missing something simple but when i click on the padlock to edit and npc nothing happens, it remains read only.

oh yeah, this is while running 5e

Welcome ubermonkey, drag the NPC to a blank spot in NPCs - this makes a copy. Click the padlock to unlock and then you can edit away.

I'm having the same problem in Pathfinder 2e and I can't seem to make a copy as you suggest

You should do it in the NPCs sidebar campaign tool.
If not working can you post a screenshot?
