If we purchase a license instead of going month to month, how long are we entitled to upgrades?

I don't think anyone has ever been asked to pay for updates. Certainly I never have. With the move to the Unity build in 2017-ish, there was mention of a small fee or pay what you want, but there hasn't been anything officially announced.

Forever. The only possible additional upgrade cost might be when the Unity build emerges, but no firm details yet.

it is very likely that there will be an upgrade cost to Unity but the cost will be modest. There might be a kickstarter there might be some other activity. There may be a base cost and an option to contribute more. There might be a sliding scale less than 1yr, less than 3yr, longer. Either way it wont be anywhere near the cost of a repurchase especially for a fairly new user. One number that was mentioned briefly as a possibility was $15 for an ultimate and $5 or $10 for a standard? something like that.
