View Full Version : Another 14 pt font extension

MODERATOR: This extension has been modified to work in all Core based rulesets.

UPDATE: Just as an fyi, I have been using this with 3.3.6 and have not seen any issues with it. Given it only adjusts the font, I don't think you will have issues with it.

So, I'm constantly on a quest to make my font more readable. I love Trenloe's extensions. I used his base 14 pt extension and modified the style (not sure what the base style is) with a droid serif font I found. It is free to distribute with the apache license. I included a pretty big disclaimer/copyright/link that will pop up in chat when the extension loads, but I think I'm covered. Trenloe, please advise if for some reason I did something wrong. I show this as your extension as modified by me, which is really only for different font type!

I've attached a couple screenshots to show the different. The first is the standard 14 pt font from the original extension and the "droid" jpg is with the new font in the attached extension. I hope you enjoy!

Very cool. I've added it to the 5E extensions list. Thanks for sharing.

Couple questions -

What is the normal font size in FG? Looks llike 10pt

To Gwydion, would it be possible to do something between the default and 14? I find the 14pt in 5E screens to be too big. It seems to squish the lines (vertically) together. I'd like to see it in 12pt for a comparison. I looked at the .ext file to see what changes might be involved but I do not have software to work with the font extension.

Thanks in advance

You can open it with winrar, 7zip etc to get access to the XML's.

I'll take a look when I can. I don't typically see a lot of squishing but now that I'm getting more familiar with the basics of extensions I'll see what I can do. Might be a while till I get to it but I'll work on it!

Hey GarthGiantbane. I still don't see issues with squishing the lines with the 14 pt font when I use it for 5E, but take a look at the attached and see if you like it better. Same droid-serif font, just 12 pt (and 14 pt for headings) instead of the original extension I posted which was 14 pt (and 16 pt for headings). I hope it is useful!

I figured out the font change. I didn't realize the .fgf extension stands for Fantasy Grounds Font and there was a tool for it in the wiki. I took that and created the 12 point fonts in Comic Sans then updated the .xml's and rezipped it. Seems to work and look great. What are the rules for sharing my modification? I don't know the legalize in using the Comic Sans font like this but I'd be happy to post the .ext if it's ok. Here's a sample visual, I scaled the UI to 80:

Edit: I didn't see your post Gwydion. Sorry for not grabbing that instead but it was a learning process too. Thanks for the update, I'll still download it and have a look.

Awesome! Glad you figured it out! As for sharing, it really depends on the font you selected and, in general the owner of the extension. I selected a font and confirmed I was free to distribute it so long as I included a copy of the apache license with it. (I researched the font online, found the owner and his requirements for using the font). You'll see that I included the link to the license in the extension. I'm not sure where comic sans comes from but I would check on what restrictions there are in terms of distributing it. I also credited Trenloe in the extension as all I did is what you did. He wrote the extension and I just unpacked it, changed the font size and specific font type, added the license reference and attribution to Trenloe.

Comic Sans MS belongs to Microsoft. I did not see anywhere that it was free to distribute so for now, I'll keep it to myself :)

I see no reason it shouldn't. That being said, my update is still downloading. As soon as it finishes, I'll test it out and let you know.

Looked at it a bit and it looks just fine. I'll be streaming my POTA game tomorrow night to give it a good test!

I used the 12pt version with 3.2.2 over the past couple of months and I didn't have any problems.

Your extensions folder in your FG data directory.

That's what I thought but it doesn't seem to have worked. Or at least it's not showing up when I start a new campaign as one of the extensions to use?

Are you using this for a 5e game or another rule set? If not 5e you might need to use the version that is not specific to 5e.

5e is indeed what I'm working in. I'm literally working through "Fantasy Grounds DnD5e DM GM 101 Part 1" on youtube and they mention it there and I definitely agree with the font size being to low.

Have you restarted FG after copying the .ext file to your <FG app data>\extensions directory?

Good Day Obeliske :)
I had a tough time finding it right off the bat, I was looking for an extension named 14 point clear font and went right past it. The name in the extension list is 5E Font - 14 point Clear Font so it was located towards the top of my list.

Hi All,
Im trying to install this Extension but I keep getting an error that the TTF file is not read. I have searched for "Clear Font" TTF and couldnt find any, I found "Clear Sans Font" TTF but I still get the error. I also installed the Druid Sans TTF to no effect.

How do I get bigger FONTS, my olden eyes are suffering!

Hi there - are you using FGU or FGC?
Its possible this doesnt work with FGU.
Try typing in the chat window /scaleui 125

Oh, ok I wasnt aware it was only for FGC, so yes I was aiming it for FGU.

Yes, that kind of improved it a little bit. I'm supposing that is a percentage scale growth, 125% from original.

So is there no way to change the font in FGU?

Thanks for the help

FGU uses one type of Font setting - and FGC originally used a different one and then the new one got added. I suspect that the font extension you loaded only had the older style of font - but thats a guess.
There are several other Big Font extensions you could try.
Many extensions have yet to be tested with FGU...

Noob here. HOW to get the 12 pt or 14 pt into my Unity config?

JimTrav57
April 30th, 2020, 17:33
I am having the same problem as the above person. I am running FG Unity. I have downloaded the extension, placed that extension in this folder:

34634

When I re-start FG, this is what comes up:

34635

Am I missing an extension that is needed in order to get the 14 point extension to work?

Thanks

I just read above, maybe the extension doesn't work with FGU????

Hey, guys. I'm the one that created that 14 pt font. I have not messed around with Unity yet so I apologize, but I will look at this when I can.

Do note that FGU is still having changes with fonts and such so I wouldn't spend too much time fine tuning any big fonts etc as it's bound to change again in the next few weeks.

It would appear that this extension doesn't work with the MoreCore ruleset either. Can it be updated to include that ruleset?

I appreciate this, thanks for taking it into consideration at least. Having this extension on classic was very helpful and after moving to unity, it's already missed. I hope someday it gets updated for unity. That said, I get that you can only do so much, and thanks for what you have done so far.

This is an extension for use with FG Classic and not FG Unity. If you are trying to use this with FGC, we will need more details please. See link in my sig for ideas n what info to include.

Try this one? I know it works with FGU. At least until/if this one is updated.

April 6th, 2022, 00:06
Ok. Sorry for the delay. I had to make sure I had the license information sorted and the correct message popping up. I submitted three builds to the forge. One just changes the font to Droid Serif which I like a lot and is clean, but it doesn't change the size of the font. The next two are bigger and biggest which increases the font size to varying degrees. Once the uploads are accepted I will post on the forge and link here.

Gwydion

Here is a link to the forge. I put three versions into the file so you can choose between normal, bigger and biggest. All three should show up in your extension options when you subscribe. This should work with anything built on CoreRPG (including 5e).

You may have to disable any themes as well in case the theme you are using overwrites the font extension.

Generally no. The problem is that the text has to fit within the fixed size boxes. You can do that chat font bigger, but not the character sheet fonts etc. They just won't fit.
You can open the extension and try altering the sizes and see what you think. You can also use the /scaleui command.
