View Full Version : New install will not run

Hey guys, just tried to install FG so I could demo it before buying, but for some reason the client doesn't want to run once the updater is finished. I've tried running everything as Admin, read/write issues don't seem to be a problem, I've tried adjusting the UI scaling, compatibility mode, drivers are up to date, nothing seems to want to work. Using the Windows installer. Any thoughts?

System Information:
Dell XPS 12 9Q23
Intel Core i5-3337U
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (10.0.14393)

Did you install via Steam?

Have you entered the correct information into settings?

ElectricalChaos

I installed using FGWebInstall.exe, and the settings are correct AFAIK.

Make sure in settings that the APP directory is pointing to where you installed FG and that the Data Directory is where the data files actually are. Make sure Cross-platform compatibility is unchecked as is Check Steam for DLC.

The directories are correct (copied the paths from the updater and pasted into Windows Explorer to make sure it's going to the right directories and not an empty folder) and both boxes are unchecked.

I'm out of ideas; it's very rare that FG won't run and if it doesn't it's almost always a permissions or folder issue.

I assumed you've tried to uninstall and reinstall? Or install via Steam?

I'm wondering if it's the install that was botched, because I never really saw an actual install process - FGWebInstall.exe more just appeared to just copy all the files into the directories, the client link just shows a generic program icon and FG doesn't appear in the list of installed programs (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features). I'm currently working on downloading Steam so I can try that option, but I have a slow internet connection so it will take some time.

Indeed, it sounds like it didn't install because it certainly should appear in your list of Apps. Let us know how you get on.

I should also have welcomed you to FG and to the community which was extremely remiss of me.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

So at this point it appears that the 3.2.0 installer file itself has a problem?

Zacchaeus

I doubt the installer has a problem but something went wrong with your install somewhere along the line since it clearly didn't install FG onto your computer. I doubt that the installer would be the problem since we'd be seeing a bunch of posts on the forums about it.

If you are getting as far as the Splash screen then you could try clicking update.

All I get is the installer opening to the updater, with settings/update/close buttons. I even tried redownloading the file and running it again and it still behaves the same. Hopefully Steam will have better luck but for right now the 2.67MB FGWebInstall.exe file just doesn't want to install the program for me.

What happens when you click on update?

ElectricalChaos

It connects to the server and downloads all the updates. Here's the log (I've masked the user name). This last run was finally able to update the Updater due to the network lagging out, but that still hasn't fixed the install.

Ok, I'm confused now becasue if, as you say, FG won't run, then I would not expect it to update. So can you be more specific when you say it won't run. What is it that you are expecting it to do that it won't do?

ElectricalChaos

What I'm expecting is for C:\Program Files (x86)\Fantasy Grounds\FantasyGrounds.exe to do....something. Anything. It acts like it wants to start and then it crashes. The only program that will do anything right now is FGWebInstall.exe. I tried to install the demo with Steam, and it wants to run, and then crashes.

Luckily I just remembered that Windows automatically logs all program crashes and exceptions. Here's one of the log entries, although all the entries are throwing the same exception code, regardless of if I'm running the direct link or trying to start it through Steam:

Faulting application name: FantasyGrounds.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x582225d4

On the launcher screen do you have a button which says Host demo? And if so what happens when you press it (this is how you would launch the demo version).

One other thing - since you have clearly registered on the forums try entering your forum user name in the settings menu and then pressing the update button next to it.

If none of that works I'm out of ideas I'm afraid and can only suggest that you send an email off to [email protected].

Sorry, I couldn't be more help.

Hey ElectricalChaos please locate the three .exe files and manually whitelist them with your antivirus program. I used The 3.2.0 fgwebinstall to install FG on the computer Im using right now.

Well, I think you just found the problem and the solution. For some reason the installer wasn't grabbing all of the data it needed without the user information. Once I put that in there, it went and grabbed all everything that the launcher needed to start. Here's the update log after that:
