I find myself on the road again and needing to port forward a router that I don't have admin access to. I have one of those unlimited data plans through my cellular provider. I can easily hotspot or tether my PC to my iPhone to get internet on my PC via my iPhone's cellular service. So the possibility exists for me to run a game if I can port forward through my iPhone's firewall. I can't find any information on doing this. Has anyone out there tried to configure the iPhone's firewall?

I have used a VPN combined with a smartphone providing the internet signal. As far as I know, 3G or LTE gives you a pooled IP, not your own IP with access to the ports.

Thanks Myrdin. That would make sense, funneling all hotspotted devices through a pooled IP. I've avoided VPN to this point. Time to join the mid 2010's.

If travel is a regular thing, then I would check out damned/Trenloe's (not sure which of the two) document on setting up your own private vpn server. Costs about $10USD/year (depending upon the deal you get at the time).

Try Hamachi first....

I travel all the time and I am the DM. I just got a VPN. Hamachi does work but everyone needs to use it. With PureVPN, just me, the DM, needed to use it.
Hotel and other public internet is insecure and using a VPN is good practice anyways.

Thanks Lord Entrails, damned and Myrdin. I will look into the VPN. Sounds like a possible solution.
