So we understand that you need have the certain port open to play which is fine when he is at his home. But when he heads back to college during the week he can't have that certain port open because college internet. Is there a way we can play without having to have that port open? Like maybe Himachi perhaps?

Thank you for your time!

You'll need some form of VPN solution.

A couple of threads that might help:

Yes Ryser. As Trenloe points out, there is a thread on how to setup Hamachi which should work for him. But note that only the host/GM needs to have that specific port open. If he is just playing in your game, he should be fine.

I can DM through the firewall in China by using a VPN that makes the port available. There are a few other solutions, including renting a server for about $10 a year that damned has written clear instructions on.

The only real benefit to a good, paid VPN is servers all over the world and only the DM needs to do it. Hamachi is free but each player needs to do something. For college students, free is good. :-)

Also consider TeamViewer. Free for personal use. Leave the PC at home running with TeamViewer running. Then remote in from where ever and take control of the home PC (with TeamViewer). The PC at home runs the session, you just control it remotely. I've done this from Hawaii recently using an iPad to control the PC back home. And about a year ago from Mexico because I had three routers between me and the Internet. Two of them had default admin passwords on them so I could port forward through them, but not the third.
