View Full Version : Help a Returning DM Get it Right!

Hello all,

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but here goes...

I am returning to FG after 6 years...I have a Full License(is that even what they call it anymore) and a handful of Lite Licenses(yeah, like I said, its been a while). This week I picked up the Core Class Pack and now have $100 more to spend on FG stuff.

As the DM for my group, I am of the belief the best purchase would be the Core Monsters Pack and the DMG.

I am a creative type with time on my hands so I make our own tokens and I'm pretty good at using the FG system to build modules for us. My players are all older, they need simple or they won't get it. The 'Drag-n-Drop' stuff I've seen from the 5th Edition Core Player Pack, that may be the only way I 'hook' them. It looks like that mechanic continues throughout the official 5th Edition products from SmiteWorks.

So, again, in my situation, would purchasing the Core Monster Pack and Complete DMG be the best investment for my game?

Thanks in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing your opinions,

K

Welcome back Kingfish,

With those two purchases and I would say you would be set to build any adventure you want.

Hola Kingfish.

The PHB is definitely the place to start. The "I am a creative type" suggests that you dont want to run the published adventures so the MM and/or the DMG would be good. If you do enjoy the published adventures they are good and the quality of the FG production is too so you might start with one of those instead.

The 5e implementation is pretty cool.

Thank y'all both for the quick responses!!!

But hey, damned (you know, that just feels wrong, correct ;) )

Anyway, I was REALLY hoping my 30+ yrs of DMing would translate to FGs...to me, as long as I have a DMG, a PHB and a MM, I can do ANYTHING... have game will travel! oh, and a bucket load of dice!

Your response reassure me that this is the purchase I need.

Thanks again and y'all have a great weekend!

If you are going to run published adventures, then the DMG and Monster Manuals can wait a bit. If you are going to run home brew, they are both fairly vital with the MM being the top priority.

As far as your licenses go, I'm wondering if maybe you have the Ultimate and some Full licenses? If you don't have the Ultimate, I'd put that on the top of your list. That's one way to make it easier for your players, so they won't have to buy a license themselves.

Published Adventures: Ultimate (if you don't already have it)
Home Brew: Ultimate (If you don't already have it), Monster Manual.

If you have the Full, then you get almost 100% credit towards the Ultimate by buying the Upgrade license.

I think the OP has a full license (still around, no called "Standard" on the FG home page (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php)) and the grandfathered lite license - player only connection to a "standard" license GM (still valid, but no longer purchasable).

Yup, Trenloe...that's it. I honestly do not know why I didn't go with the Ultimate License when I first made this purchase...only thing I can think of was, Free version didn't allow the players to build their character 'off-line' back in the day so I felt that was a BIG deal for my group of slugs...they take freaking WEEKS rolling up characters, writing out DETAILED backgrounds. It gets SILLY sometimes. But the ability to do much of the work on their own was huge.

True, true...but it does make me feel better if the Ultimate License was in fact not an option at the time of this purchase ;)

Thanks...I remember this being one of the BEST communities I have ever been a part of. I told my wife about back in 2010 and she said, "Well, I just love nerds. They are always the friendliest and best sort." That wasn't what I meant but...well she married one so I guess I can't complain :D

If it makes you feel better I did the same - I think I was attracted to the bundle discount or something like that - but I switched up to the Ultimate. Stick with what you have and encourage new players to go get their own license :)

That is my plan...I have already directed my niece to come check it out. She is a HUGE Call of Cthulhu fan and GMs. I think she might be able to convince a few of her old college friends to buy a few copies too...just doing what I can to help! ;)
