View Full Version : yet more tech and dev questions about graphics.

following the digestion of the last round of answers: i have this scenario for the devs.....

it SEEMS to be the case that the tokens sit on top of the map in a fairly haphazard order, and that they can be placed atop each other and moved off again without complaint, but that whatever was moved last seems to be whats "ON TOP" and obviously all the icons and characters and beasties sit atop the map itself which forms the background plate.

my question is thus: how tricky/possible/likely/ would it be to implement a scenario like i have illustrated here.1548215482 basically to catagorise tokens into two types, forground, and background. obviously within those catagories things continue to operate exactly as they currently do.

this sort of scenario would enable the use of props and spell/effect tokens, and allow creators of these much more lattitude in their creation. (suddenly the need/requirement for transparency becomes a design choice instead of a necessity)

id love some feedback pls devs, even if its just 'go away anoying poster'

happy hunting everyone. thank you for your time.

There is an Enhanced Layers Extension which gives you another layer for things like furniture. This could be used for things like effects instead.

so this ability already exists, THAT is great to know sir thankyou.

i play in a couple of campaigns, but as a client obviously. ive not seen this feature implimented in play. i would assume that tokens added in via this feature sit "under" the character and monster tokens? are tokens in this layer manipulable by anyone or are they the sole province of the dm? can they be 'locked' or 'unlocked'?

it bears investigation, thank you for your reply sir.

There are no Sirs here you no good sheep loving kiwi!
Its really a matter of GM preference.
As you are very interested in (and very good at) the graphical side you see more potential there...
Some of us graphical luddites dont use all those fancy fandangled graphics.

Another extension you should look at if you have access to the Savage Worlds ruleset is the Dead Markers extension.... its quite fun and I think right up your alley.

i saw the ravenloft isometric maps, and found a need, so i did em.
i saw that theres no gorgeous tokensets for the 80+ persistent magical effects under 5e, so im doing em.

im also working on detailed townmaps, including about 80 buildings catagorised into merchants, traders, craftsmen, municipal, magical, religious.
ive almost completed a bunch of ravenloft themed wilderness maps.
im also doing faerun dragons lairs, (google 'old gnawbones') and finally im playing around with aberation lairs, and with wilderness maps for the outer planes. (almost zero of any of these and none anywhere for the wierder places like oceanus or mechanus or limbo)

my hands are full of these projects, and i have not heard of savage worlds :D
so yeah im game for anything that will extend the graphic side of this system. my DM has been very patient with me doing graphic dev for this, but im going to leave exploring new worlds til ive finnished this giant wishlist of eye candy :D (having just looked up dead markers :D thats AWESOME, tho i can imagine doing a whole bunch of smashed corpse icons to be..... a bit of a grind) :D

ive asked around about Enhanced Layers Extension and been informed that its extremely popular with some people and disliked by others. im wondering if this feature or one like it will ever become fully integrated into the software...?
likely? not likely?

With Unity not terribly far away I wouldn't have thought so.

You can search the forums for "unity" and you will find out the answers to your questions that you will probably ask once I tell you what it is *G*

Unity, or FGU, or FG4, or whatever it might end up being called... SmiteWorks is re-writing Fantasy Grounds using the Unity engine. There is no defined released date and won't be until SW is confident on a date. Intent is for initial release to duplicate all current functionality, but not to have new/enhanced functions (though I suspect it actual will). FGU will be able to use all current content. Major changes/enhancements to the current engine are not expected, as it takes away from work on FGU.

Other threads will tell you more, please review those and ask question in those threads so we can keep related info together :)

post your question in the 3.2.0 thread for now....
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?32034-Test-Release-v3-2-0/page38

deck chairs? titanic?
maps are not going away.

fantasy grounds is being rebuilt on the unity game engine. it is a huge project that has been going on for a couple of years already. the intent is that unity will support all the existing rulesets as is (more likely with some modification). unity will (possibly not straight away but very soon after its released) also offer dynamic lighting and even 3d dungeons and minis etc.

no one knows whether the extensions will work or not as yet or whether any particular ones will be incorporated into the base.

im guessing that there multiple layers, effects layers/options are more likely to get more love/attention in unity but we wont know that until we do.

2d maps wont be going away either. i think i will continue to prefer 2d maps but that will definitely vary between groups and maybe even between games.

As stated by the others, the goal is to make sure the current DLC and functionality continue to work as expected on the Unity version. (We're just calling it FGU internally.)

It is very likely that the image control used for maps and handouts will receive an overhaul as part of the initial release, but we haven't finalized on the details yet, since we are working on the core systems still (dice, rulesets, graphics, network, etc.)

Cheers,
