Hi all,

We have started a FG campaign (ruleset 5E, FG 3.1.7) : one ultimate license, 4 demo license.
One of my olayer running under windows 7 has some nasty bug. After launching some dice, his FG crashed. He has to launch again FG , join the game in order to be able to keep on.

In a session of 3 hours, he crashed at least twenty times.

Any clue to help us ?

Thanks,

Trenloe

Does he always crash when rolling dice? If so, this is probably a graphics driver issue with the 3D dice - using DirectX 9. They may need experiment with their 3D settings for their graphics card/driver.

EDIT: Also, is there any error message? Are they running on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7? If they are on 32-bit are they the only players on 32-bit - i.e. are the other on 64-bit?

Also, which modules are being shared with the players? Make sure that only the PHB, and not the MM or DMG are shared in the Modules screen.

The GM can always share any individual record during a game, but player clients immediately load all data and graphics from modules into memory which the player has open. This can cause memory issues for some players.

More explanation from my players

Not always when rolling dice, but when I want to trigger the crash voluntarily I usually click on roll dice repeatedly until it crashes. It sometimes takes over 30 seconds to trigger the crash. In-game it has also crashed when doing nothing, or dragging windows, while other players were rolling, etc... I haven't found a pattern, really - just that it's quite often and especially when we are on a combat grid - in this setting I crash just about once between each of my turns. Outside of combat, it seems to last longer (perhaps 1 crash per 15 mins or so).

I have Win 7 64-bit, 4 Go RAM, and my CGU is ATI Radeon 5800 series.
When it crashes, Windows notifies me that the program has to be closed. I can't find a log with errors to share so it's hard to provide more details.

Note: I have uninstalled/reinstalled FG -> no success.

On the users FG Join Game Screen there is a Nuke icon. Have them click this and see if that improves the situation.

Well, it doesn't really improve the situation.

At one moment, we have in the chat entry :
**** connection lost, Waiting for reconnect
Then
**** disconnected

Smoltok have the player try the steps in this thread - starting with the ping test

https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?34043-Player-can-t-load-PHB-module-from-me

Also have them update their Graphics Card driver and their DirectX.

To throw more kindling on the fire gentlemen, I have been working with Smoltok on issues with my Combat Tracker Effect Visibility Options Extension (EVOE). I don't know if he is still trying to use EVOE, but he had issues with players not seeing dice when trying to use it. I believe he also has several other extensions loaded (or at least did). I don't know if extensions could add insult to the issue or not. But it's information you might need or want.

Thanks for the heads up Minty.

@Smoltok - when you next game with your group, can you minimise the use of any extensions, remove all of them if you can?

I have seen sudden crashes when FG tries to reference code that no longer exists - no warnings, no reported errors, just a sudden crash. For example: an event handler, OOB message handler, or similar, that was created and then the object it was tied to was removed but some code elsewhere still references it (sometimes when a new event is registered, but the old one still exists and when it is ran there is no reference for it). Usually due to cleanup code missing from when a window was closed and events/callbacks aren't unregistered. Examples of cleanup code can be seen in the FG rulesets, search for onClose and you'll find a few.

I ask him to check the following :

1) Sounds like he has a permissions problem with his cache folder.

2)
Launch FG and click on Settings. Change the Data Directory to a folder other than "C:\ProgramData\Fantasy Grounds", where your currently logged in user has full read/write permissions. (Such as "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Fantasy Grounds") Then re-run a Check for Update. You may need to move any campaigns from the old location to the new location after a change.
Change FG shortcut link to Run as Administrator.
Change the permissions on the C:\ProgramData\Fantasy Grounds folder to allow read & write access to the currently logged in user (or the Everyone group).
3) Is he using a wireless connection? If so please have him try with a LAN cable.

4) What Anti Virus is he using? Please see what happens if you disable the Anti Virus temporarily.

5) Launch the command on terminal : ping 8.8.8.8
and see what the packet loss is like. It should be under 1%.

Last news :

After all the changes I ask him to do, last night was the first time he never bug. (and with all extensions I use for information)
I don't know exactly which change has been efficient, but well if someone encounters same kind of bug, please try to do what I wrote in previous posts.

Thanks to all of the people of this thread which spent time to help us !

Just to alert that m yFG player was crashing because he has the Origin plateform (from Electronics Arts) launched when he used FG.
Without it , FG is working very well.
