View Full Version : Connection issues since my IP changed how they use addressing

I've read through the boards to find a solution and it seems like there is only 1 thing I can do but I'd like any comments to the contrary.

In short, my ISP does NAT addressing on their end and they refuse to issue a traditional IP, I can't even purchase a static IP from them. They also refuse to open the necessary port on their end. It seems like the only option I have is to use a VPN like hamatchi or other paid for services. Any other options? I had zero issues with FG before my IP switched to NAT with very strict port blocking.

Thanks for any comments in advance guy!

If you have other ISP options call them and discuss - then let your current ISP know that you will change if they cannot fix for you.

Otherwise...
Hamachi is the simplest option for you. It does involve your players also using Hamachi.
Some VPN services will allow you to remap/forward specific ports - check before signing anything long term.
And if you are feeling adventurous for $10 a year you can build your own VPN server per these instructions: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i1mxkdubn8kt46k/Fantasy%20Grounds%20VPN%20Server%20Setup%20-%20draft.docx?dl=0

I have no other choice for an internet service provider in my area sadly, one of the reasons they can be so inflexible and unaccommodating. Thanks for the tip on building my own vpn.

I believe the team are testing some new connection options with Unity - but that is still somewhere off in the future so you will need to try one of these other options for now.

Any tips on a paid for VPN to use? I can't do Hamatchi as several of my players aren't able to install it on their systems and I have 6 usual players plus myself.

You can use Hamachi for more than 4 players. You just create a second network and give the details for that network to half the players. Your Hamachi IP will be teh same in both networks.

However if some of your players cannot use Hamachi you could try this (it is quite technical - but I believe the instructions are quite straight forward) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/i1mxkdubn8kt46k/Fantasy%20Grounds%20VPN%20Server%20Setup%20-%20draft.docx?dl=0
Others have used PureVPN successfully and there are some other more expensive ones too.

Any tips on a paid for VPN to use?
I've successfully used PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/ and HideMyAss: https://www.hidemyass.com/

However, the last time I worked with someone to get PureVPN working they were told by their support that the needed to pay for the extra NAT firewall. Whereas my ID worked fine on their system, the new person's ID didn't (some installation). PureVPN support said there shouldn't have been any difference between the two IDs, and we didn't want to push it in case they "fixed" mine (breaking FG use for me). HideMyAss (usually a bit more expensive than PureVPN) works fine for me too. Both have money back guarantees, so I'd recommend giving them a go and getting your money back if they don't work for you.

I needed to buy the private ip option for pureVPN and that has consistently worked.
