View Full Version : Selectable Push Pins

I'm sure someone has probably already thought of this, but when I poked around, I couldn't find it anywhere. I know there's a lot of stuff in the works for FG, but I think this could be potentially easy, as it's simply a graphics change and shouldn't really affect any functionality.

One of my biggest problems is that certain things create pushpins but they don't actively show a tooltip, so then you don't know what you're looking at. Or in rooms where there are several things, you have to hover around and can't tell at-a-glance what things are. I love to use "map tokens" for some of this stuff, but because token locations don't save as part of a module, having a secret door token, or a trap token doesn't really help you prepare. It all has to be redone in the campaign, which sometimes requires quite a bit of work, and then must be done each and every time you play.

What about - selectable push pins? Like when you drag an item to the map, it either defaults to a particular type of pushpin (T for trap, E for encounter, etc), or you can right-click a radial menu to select the pushpin graphic you want to use? Then we could have "T" for trap, "E" for encounter, Numbers 1 - 5, for rooms which have more than one encounter, and where the encounters must happen in order. Perhaps even token icons as pushpin heads - gold coins for treasure, etc.

What do you guys think?

This would be nice. And it's already been requested on the Wishlist: https://fg2app.idea.informer.com/proj/?ia=95803
And related (coloured pins): https://fg2app.idea.informer.com/proj/?ia=81597

There is a way around this. It's a bit of a hassle, but nowhere near the hassle of the pins or fooling with the campaign.

Wow, never thought of color coded push-pins. I'm off to vote for that.

I'm glad one of us will! If only I had that effect on my own sleep patterns or lack thereof.

I thought you could hover over the pins to get a tooltip of the story title or image name. Is that correct? I don't use them so much myself. If so, that's a workaround while waiting for a nice graphic or colour coding.

Valarian yes it does display onmouseover or onhover or whatever the FG/LUA terminology is - and that is definitely helpful. More colours would still be nice :) As would being able to place labels on the map.

This works great, unless you happen to have three pins in every room, and then you've got to hover over everything to sort them out. It's especially difficult when you use DOE Sound Extension, because for some reason the sound name doesn't tooltip, so if you have more than one sound in the room, you're doomed. >.<

Oh wow... well there's a wonderful way to add my Secret Doors and stuff, so I don't have to constantly open the GM map, lol. The only problem is: Enhanced Layers Extension.

Me and my memory. Looks like I found the colored pushpins thread and voted on it at the beginning of this month, but don't remember doing it AT ALL. However, I did go and vote for Lord Entrail's upgraded version. (Yay!)

Thanks everyone for paying attention to my rambling. :D

The process that a lot of people use is to have one pushpin in a room/location that links to a story entry. Within the story entry have details of the location (description, notes, etc.) and also drag links to other FG objects relevant to the story entry for the location - NPCs, encounters, treasure parcels, images to share, DOE sound links, etc.. These will appear as links in the story entry with the name of the link next to it (which you can edit if you wish). All required links for a location with a meaningful label (no need to hover over and wait for a tooltip) and much less pin clutter on the map.

That's what I was originally doing, but I liked the idea of pinning environmental sound effects, such as drafts, door sounds, or traps; because when I put them in the entry, I sometimes forget to trigger them at the proper time. >.<

Oh well, nothing can be perfect, right? I love Fantasy Grounds and appreciate everything that everyone on the team, and in the community does for it. :D

Getting ready to come back to FG (my turn to run my game in our gaming group), and I'm going to have some catching-up to do. What is 'DOE sound links' (that Trenloe referenced), and 'environmental sound effects' that you (Netjera) mentioned?

Could you provide me with a link? I'm going off to search now, but I will probably still need more data.

Thanks.

[edit] Well, I already see something new and exciting in the Wiki: Linking TeamSpeak & Syrinscape

That sounds (no pun intended) awesome. Researching now.

[edit #2] Ahh... so, DOE == Dulox-Oz Extension ?? Is that right? That's great!

Yes, DOE stands for a Dulux-Oz Extension. You'll find a list here (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20320-FG-3-0-CoreRPG-Extensions&p=242586&viewfull=1#post242586)

Well, it's none of my business, of course, but he shoulda picked a less-loaded (at least for us 'mericans) acronym then DOE. There's too much history there, and it's a little disconcerting ;-) I think DOX would have been more in keeping with the spirit...

But, like I said, none of my business. Now where's my paypal bookmark... I gotta try and make it worth his while to continue on this path... Ok. That's done. Now, back to integrating the DOE Sound extension...
