hello i was wondering if there is a way to go about tranferring read-only files to an empty campaign or would i have to type everything in from one file to another. thank you.

Hi johntjamesonjr Im not sure what you are trying to achieve but this sounds like you could have your a prep game where you setup all your stuffa nd export it to a module (/export in the chat window) and you can use that module in all your other games of the same ruleset.

This is how I deal with it:
One exported Module as campaign source, including a huge map of the Sword Coast (thanks to Mike Schley) with hundreds of nitty gritty details on every spot ever released, including region specific maps of towns, castles, dungeons and the like, plus a very detailed random encounter table with dozens of sub tables.
One exported module with a localized version of the adventure I'm currently playing with all the story entries and a local player map, which is frequently updated by adding new marks of the hundreds of spots players explored (after completly translating Last Mine of Phandelver - and giving it to Doug for release, I translated the first 4 chapters of Princes of the Elemental Evil into german - all approx. a paper back book worth more than 200 pages of text).
One House Rule specific module, created with parse including movement rules, new character classes, abilities and such - done with parse to make it read only to all and give easy reference to common knowledge)
One exported module with more than 150 'inspiration card' images and descriptions, giving more flavour for in-game rewards.
One exported module with generic maps, like battle floor plans, etc.
One directly created module containing a home made spellbook, where new spells for each class can be easily put in
More than 60 token pack modules from Devin Night, I can add on demand for each search by category (and link/put them into the localized module to save on memory), bundled by myself with each a low res and hi res version.
...and of course the usual DM, Player, and Monster Handbook for reference and easy gameplay.

Of course you can do it differently, just a suggestion. :-)

Not sure what you are trying to do, but try this:

Open the read-only asset in the empty campaign in FG. Drag the link (usually a red icon of some sort) to the empty campaign's main list of the same type. So for an item, drag the module item to the first tab list in the Item window; for an NPC, drag the NPC's red link to the first tab list in the NPC/Personalities window.

hmmm one has to wonder...

Doug, could Smiteworks release "Regional Sourcebooks" consisting of the pretty colorful gaming maps filled with pins which give perhaps overview details and images. some might have subentries detailing towns at whatever level chosen. some might expand to images or sub maps.

perhaps starting points of SW modules could be added where if the person owned them and had it open in modules, it would link right into them etc.

allow for people to add their own material to it since all your preload is read only. allow multiple pins on/near same pin since I may with to rewrite an official entry with my own flavor (now that think of it, ability to gray-out/disable supplied PoIs as well for when your campaign is different?

even if this sounds good to SW, sounds like a further on up the road thing. figure, with the new DMGuild rules on allowing FR info, this compilation thing might be sellable by someone here or by SW here?

@Varsuuk, A few of us had a discussion a few weeks ago about doing something similar to this using DOE Locations extension. I've already talked to Dulux on getting permission to use his extension for this. Adding a map or multiple maps to this would be a cool addition.

Not that I'm opposed to SW doing this officially, but I doubt they have interest or the resources for it. But as a community product released through the DMsG it would be pretty cool.

You can do it yourself, as I did written above. Purchase Mike Schley's FR map:
https://mikeschley.zenfolio.com/p858006957/h5ea715c3#h5ea715c3
paste all PDF's together with e.g. Adobe Photoshop to form a big 8k x 8k map, create two versions, one w/o player Infos and one DM version and reference to all material you have/find.
I used PhotoImpact, as it's my favourite and created hundreds of embedded images for river, city, etc. names and put it into a module creating pins for each entry.
I'm afraid I cannot share, as all material is protected by copyright. If you really want, you can do this yourself. I can select each of the hundred items adding any to a player specific map, it's really nice.

Why would you plan to release this through the DM's Guild?

To use WotC artwork.

The DMsG allows the use of FR names and locations. Many of the FR locations are protected, without another type of license, where else would/could it be released?

To use WotC artwork.

Nylafs, very little of the WotC artwork has been released for use in DMsG products. I've asked One Book Shelf staff and the answer is basically that their is no intention at the moment to release any new (or current product) artwork.

As Targas says, the official maps are all protected, and can't be used without additional licence, even through the DMsG. So, inclusion of maps would have to be original maps created by someone in the project team.

If you were going to do this you could/would/should approach Mike for a deal on a smaller version than the one he sells - but bigger than the ones the Wizards supply - and work out the math and offer him some dollars per copy that makes sense in the overall price and to him...

My thought had been to release the project for free. But if it were going to be for profit, then yes, I agree to approach Mike about it.

But, I'm not willing/able to put in the time to do it myself, and the other thread didn't garner enough interest in doing it so I think it's just going to remain an idea. Unless Targas wants to try to get license to release what he's done, but that would probably be all his.

Well, well - continued. I'm currently in contact with Mike. Give me a day or two to find a suitable solution. All I can say at the moment is that Mike's response looks positive so far, considering former purchase of the sword coast map on his site. However, there might be more practical ways, depending on the demand. Let's see..

The problem is manyfold. It's not just the artwork itself, but all the intellectual property of region specific names, etc.
Until someone can clarify with WotC (or Doug) on how we can handle this, I simply cannot proceed. :-(

I purchased that map (and will get more for those I can repurpose)

I'm going to look at that PhotoImpact in case it helps me understand better, but what did you mean about adding "hundreds of embedded images for river, city, etc names" I'm guessing maybe you are talking about adding more towns or naming unnamed objects etc?

I guess by using a layer? You can customize Mike's map for your campaign? I know nothing re image profs. I bought my wife CS4 years ago and she used it to make bazillion scrap book pages for our baby. Our son is now 9 and played his first short tabletop 3 months ago ;)

Also, Hargis - you aren't by any chance a Youtuber who posts examples of how you do your customizations on YouTube..... Because that would be too much to hope for...Like Xmas in July :)

All of the IP of regional names & people can be used with the DMsG license/release. At least I think so. I'm sure that I read that when I got up to speed and before publishing mine, but I can't find it now. :(

I'll try to look for it some more, and will let you know if I find it and where.

Yeah - check out the DMs Guild license and what it gives you access too... heaps of stuff!
