Hi,

anyone aware of this Norton report, and going to tell Symantec if the error is just a false alarm, or the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe is really infected with a Trojan.Gen.SMH virus ?

I think if it was infected with anything then we'd all be filling the forums with posts about it. I'm pretty sure that any AV would pick that up.

"yes hello my name is Norton what may I help madam with today?"
"yes thankyou I was interested in this fantasygrounds. would you have it in my size?"
"........oh good lord no...... You do not know what you want,Norton knows what you want! " Norton give you a little slap on the shoulder "Ill get you something nice"

Basically, if Norton doesn't know something is safe (i.e. it doesn't have a high enough positive reputation with Norton) then it assumes it is unsafe and blocks it. A very conservative approach, but not necessarily a bad one.

I just get the feeling that ANY antivirus nowadays needs to make themselves visible, and will warn about stuff, any stuff really, and then pat themselves on the back for doing so. And then show off about it. My Avast software has been annoying as hell.

The problem with Norton (apart from the fact that they were recently in the press for basically stuffing up something shocking - see Ares Technicana website for details) is that nobody - and I mean absolutely NOBODY - with any sort of respectable ICT qualification will go anywhere near it, becuase we all know just how much sh!t it is!

If you want a good (free) anti-virus then look at avira. I used to say look at AVG, but AVG was bought out by some money-grubbing @ssholes about 9 months ago and now it's little better than spam-ware.

Just the $0.02 worth of an ICT Professional with over 30 years in the game :)

Kaspersky has been golden for me for over 10 years now.

It's a pity there is no decent virus protection SW on the market..

Kaspersky.

I heard that recently Kaspersky started to get very controlling and uncomfortable.

I set up an account on the Norton website, verified ownership of the domain and submitted information for them so they can remove the false positive.
https://safeweb.norton.com

They are flagging the site because our patch system is accessible by URL and it downloads a new version of our updater if you toggle between Dev, Live and Test.
FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe

It is completely intentional and safe for our patch system and our updater to download new files.

Trend Micro seems to be acting similar.. every time the test 3.2 version is upgraded I get screams of panic from the trend micro software.. saying i have been attacked by
ransom-ware. and then blocking either fantasy grounds or the updater app, until a later box appears.. that lets me manually open the app.

Of course maybe they are just noticing the pattern.. upgrade fantasy grounds.. then purchase tokens, extensions etc... and deciding all that other extra stuff is ransom I'm paying....
