Just wondering if anyone who has ran this has remade the other prisoners into actual PC characters so they are easy to distribute and for the party to use? Or do you see any reason this should not be done?

You can do that if you want; but it's just as easy to leave them as NPCs and just share them with the players who are going to play them.

I've read the first part of the intro to this module (the cells) and from what I see is that the NPC's are made out to be scapegoats in how the drow treat their 'well behaved' and no so well behaved prisoners. I do recall some note saying you can do this with the PC's if they get a tad rowdy, but the whole point is to show and make your players want to escape.
However as normal, as GM/DM you have creative license on how you play out a module :)
