In an effort to avoid searching the entire forum for tokens I am making a comprehensive list of Token Downloads. This will be edited a lot as I get this done. These are links to the specific threads, so please reply there if you are commenting on certain packs. If I missed yours, post a link below and I will add it. If you find this useful I will keep it updated to the best of my ability. I realize there are only 2 pages of stuff right now, but this might be more useful in the future.

Thanks! I was just going though my system figuring out what tokens I had.

Good idea.

If I could make two suggestions,

1. Consider including an explanation of what to do once you have the images downloaded to your folder. (What folder to copy them into.) Or a link to such an explanation.

2. Consider including an explanation of the "best practices" for creating tokens. By this I mean, use jpeg or bmp or something else? File size? Etc. Again, or a link to such an explanation.

Now, if only FG didn't stop letting me View and Create Character's locally everytime I tinker with the tokens...I tried to do this again recently and had to reinstall to get it running.

Now, if only FG didn't stop letting me View and Create Character's locally everytime I tinker with the tokens...I tried to do this again recently and had to reinstall to get it running.

It seems that while this issue was corrected at one place in the patch 1.04 it remained at another. Namely, the tokens folder (at least the \data\tokens\) may generate a system file Tokens.db, which prevents Fantasy Grounds from running in the "local mode". Delete that file (you have to change the folder options to show hidden system files) and you should be ok. This will definitely be corrected in the future.

Thanks for letting me know. There is a big difference between knowing that there is a problem and wondering whether I am doing something wrong!

Of course, I can't figure out how these other guys are making these tokens and how everyone else is using them without having the same problem I am having.

Once I am a bit more sure about how to install tokens, I will either write an explination or link to one (if I find it explained better then I could explain it myself). I also have not done much in the way of creating maps. I have Campaign Cartographer Pro on my machine, and have not used it at all yet. I would like to be able to rate the tokens or at least give a bit more in the way of general information on them, but I have not downloaded them all yet.

I will add more stuff to the list when I get a chance.

I did some token creation in photoshop. Quick description of how I did them (without having photoshop in front of me, which means I'll probably use bad terminology here... I'm not a PS expert).

Found good pics of monsters and brought them into PS.
Opened a workspace and created a layer with a circle (the border of the token), image canvas 60x60 pixels.
Cropped face of monster and changed canvas size to as close to 57x57 as possible.
Use some tool within PS to move the cropped image into the workspace with the circle.
Set the layers and opacity so that the monster's image appears within and behind the circle.
Save as a .gif, so only the circle and the monster within the circle appears (if you save as a .jpg the area outside of the circle shows up as well).
I haven't posted what I've done for download because I have no idea if I would be infringing on copyrights. The pics were from various d20 rules websites. Richvalle can check in to state if he liked the way the tokens looked.

Okay, here is how I make tokens in PS.

First, I select a good, quality picture to import into Photoshop.
Then I crop the image to the size and picture that I want for the token.

If the token is to be transparent, I use the Select=>Color Selection to make the selection, with the feathering adjusted so only the token is selected.
I then Inverse the selection,
Then I use the background eraser to erase out the background.
I then use the image size command to resize the image to 45 x 45 Pixels. (the community standard is 50 x 50 pixels per square, but I go a little smaller so the token fits on the inside of the square.)

At this point, I save for the web [Ctrl+Shift+Alt+s] and select the PNG-24 format. This usually saves the picture at high quality, and keeps the image file size down.

If you do not care about the quality of the image, go ahead and save it in JPEG format. I try to steer away from the GIF format, I just personaly do not like it.

I really hope that this helps you.

BTW: If you really want to make a coin-like token, follow the above steps until you have cropped your picture. You start a new layer with the draw command. Make sure that the fill is turned off, and you are only using the stroke option.
At this point, you can use the layer effects to create to your hearts content, ie. Bevel, Contour, drop shadow...
Once you are finished with this, you want this layer to be at the bottom of the stack of layers.
Click on the layer with the picture that you cropped.
Then you need to [CNTL+Click] on the layer with the coin. This will create a selection based on the coin layer's shape.
Inverse this selection, then delete the outside.
Once you get this far, use [CTRL+A] to select all, then [CTRL+X] to cut the layer, then [CNTL+V] to repaste the layer. This will center the circle for you.
Repeat the above procedure for the picture of the token, and you will have a nice, centered token.
Now you Resize the image to 45 x 45, and follow the instructions for saving, and put it in the token file, and Blammo! You are ready to go.

Hope that this helps.

NOTE: I am not in favour of using the community standard of 50 X 50 Px, as my maps are HUGE! So I have gone half of that. 25 X 25 Px still shows enough detail in my books, so we will see after this weekend's game.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Its true that 25x25 is small but looks ok. But... I was working on some tokens using the 50 x 50 standard. I was able to make large critters 100x100 and tiny ones 25x25 and they all looked ok.

Hmm, though I wonder if I could use 25x25 standard and drop them on a blown up map of the WLD and they would look ok... dang. Now I have to try it. :)

Hmm, though I wonder if I could use 25x25 standard and drop them on a blown up map of the WLD and they would look ok... dang. Now I have to try it.

Its not neccessarilly for me that I make the map smaller. I just found that if FG has too many images open at once, or if the image itself was too large, it kicked people off. I'm not really into cutting down the images into individual rooms, until we get to a point where token names are saved.
This may not seem like a big deal, but if you are running 10 mooks plus 8 players, that is 18 tokens to rename everytime you open a new map! Pain in the arse if you ask me. So, by simply reducing all of the standard sizes by 50% seems like a good comprimise for now.

BTW. At the 50 x 50 Px standard, a 25 x 25 Px creature would be considered small. (The next size down from Medium) Wheras a tiny creature is 12.5 x 12.5 Px. It gets tricky using the 25 x 25 Px format, as a tiny creature is now 6.25 Px x 6.25 Px. :)

Just my 2 cents.

Re the players handbook pg 149 a small creature (halfling) still has 5 feet for facing. Tiny is 2.5, Dim 1 and Fine 1/2.

The system file is not Tokens.db, but Thumbs.db, sorry... Hopefully my carelessness hasn't caused much trouble to anyone.

If 50x50 px = Medium creature (5'x5' face), a tiny creature would be 25x25 px (2.5' x 2.5' face).

A small creature takes up a 5'x5' face. But it still doesn't make sense to make a small creature the same size as a medium creature. I make my small creatures 35x35 px. This is about 3/4 the size of a medium creature (which is what a small creautre can lift compared to a medium sized one).

That's my 3.5 cents. ;)

Many of kalmarjan's tokens are on the community download page (https://www.fouruglymonsters.com/downloads_community.htm)at the FUM website.

To anyone that has created custom tokens to share with the FG community: if you would like to house them in our community downloads area on the FUM website, stop by and let us know (custom content only, no token coversions of copyrighted content please).

You can find a few free tokens over at my web site (https://www.wyldfurr.com/), or my packs at RPGnow.com (https://www.rpgnow.com/default.php?manufacturers_id=2815)

Unlike most others, I use a scaling system of 3:1. Thats 3 pixels to 1 inch.

I am still using FG 1.5, because we are in a custom ruleset.

If anyone could explain how to create a token set that would be great.

I use PaintShop Pro and I can create all the pictures I want just fine.

If I place them in the Tokens/Host folder I can access them and no else can. If I place them in the Tokens/Shared folder I can access them and no else can. If I place them in the both folders, I have two sets of the same tokens that I can access and no else can.

I have found the the 'Tokens_????' file under the usersettings folder, but editing it does not seem to make a difference. Of course I'm probably not editing it correctly.

If someone could explain how to create token sets, and make them work. That would be great.

Players should be able to access the token in tokens\shared in FG1 (and pass them around as token spam :p a real problem in FG1). Make sure you are using the tokens folder under the Fantasy Gounds Folder not the Fantasy Gounds\<YourCampaign>\Tokens folder. All tokens in this folder are GM only.

They are under the 'Fantasy Grounds\tokens\shared\Bakshara' folder.
On my side I see all the standard tokens (arrow, colored dots & the alphabet) and a bag. The bag opens to show my custom tokens. I made these of the player's images. I did this so they can have a token that looks like them. This is why I what them to be able to access it. Then, when I share a map, they can put themselves on the map and move around as I unmask it.

Right now I have to put them on the map. THEN they can move those tokens around.

It works perfectly for me, I just tried it in FG1. I suggest you check it yourself. Start FG1 as a host and note the local IP number. Then start another version of FG1 on the same computer with a different user name and connect to the local IP number and see if the Client sees the tokens in shared.

I have tried that, though not that way. I had one of my players connect and disconnect as I moved/copied those tokens from the host and shared folders and even under and not under the Bakshara folder. He never had them show up on his side.

Now the question I have for you. Are those tokens you made or tokens you bought?

These tokens are tokens I made from the player's character images. That maybe the difference.

Griogre
September 13th, 2007, 02:57
They were all tokens I made. I don't like top down tokens for D&D because facing is not important. It shouldn't make any differance whether they were bought tokens or not other than scale.

I suggested you connect to yourself so you could be sure there weren't any confusion communicating with a player. There is also a token file under the campaign\usersettings that "remembers" what token is in each bag. Because of this when you add new tokens if you do not delete the tokens_<username> everthing will end up in the top level box.

Bakshara
September 19th, 2007, 17:58
The tokens_<username> file under the usersettings folder is the key.

In that file I had to add my own data after the standard list of tokens.

data/tokens/arrow.png::102:112
data/tokens/knob1.png::107:167
...
data/tokens/knob5.png::153:167

tokens/Shared/Bakshara/P5:Bakshara:26:52
tokens/Shared/Bakshara/P6:Bakshara:26:52

I don't understand exactly how it works, but it does. The P1 through P6 are the images my players chose to use for their characters.

For making tokens and portraits this tool is pretty useful:

You can use it to either make great portraits, or set it as background for nice tokens that look like miniature bases.
