Deadlands Noir: New Orleans

The year is 1931, the place is New Orleans… the Big Easy… but the history is not entirely our own.

The Roaring Twenties have roared to a close. Eighteen months ago, banks failed, stocks crashed, and companies shut their doors. Then last summer, dust storms and grasshopper swarms swept the country like the plagues of Egypt, obliterating farms and dreams. The politicians say the worst is over, but most people are still making do with hope and pocket lint, and most are running low on pocket lint. Money talks these days, and when it does, most everyone listens. A good job is hard to find, but a trustworthy soul might be even harder.

It’s almost enough to make a fella overlook the shadow at the end of the alley or ignore those strange bumps in the night. Almost, but not quite. Because some of you have seen those shadows… and they’re not what Mama would'a called"nat'rul"…

Silver Dollar Sam Carolla, boss of the Black Hand. Top dog of the underworld. But rumors have been swirling about infighting among his lieutenants, and some of those rumors have resulted in bullets flying, banks robbed, and mob soldiers dead... Some even whisper that infighting is only the tip of troubles now roiling in New Orleans' underworld.

You wouldn't know from looking at Silver Dollar Sam. Corolla himself maintains a supremely confident exterior and moves efficiently to crush all signs of dissension under his wing-tipped shoes.

But N'Oleans has men -- and women -- who look into things. Dig past the surface to investigate the dark dealings concealed beneath. You can hire one too, if you need help, or you want to learn the ugly truth. These investigators aren't all angels, themselves, but they can put two and two together and they have the grit to follow the trail wherever it leads. All they ask is an honest day's wage. A little whiskey never hurt, neither.

And New Orleans has lawmen, too, who look into things, and some say there are still a few who aren't corrupt. Hard to tell which is which, though. Either way, a sharp eyed night walker or a sober reveler (is there such a thing?) might spot a police detective burning the midnight oil on a stakeout, waiting for something to break. (Okay, they're not burning oil -- they stay concealed in the dark.)

What keeps these nighthawks alert during long, midnight hours? Maybe it's the high class dames who can be seen keeping dangerous company, somehow always looking like a million bucks at a time when nobody has many bucks at all. "Why does all the grace and glamour go only to the rich, and not to Working Joes?" they must ask themselves, already knowing the answer. At least on these long nights, every now and then a shamus can get a glimpse of something easy on the eyes...

The storms that simmer in New Orleans are about to break. Find out how in the case file, A Bad Night at the Office.

If I didn't already have a game going at the same time I'd totally want in, this sounds so amazing. I hope it goes well and that you want to run it again sometime in the future.

Happy gaming!

Hector loves things that go bump in the night. This is another great scenario especialy if you like your gaming to be a little deeper than killing it just because it has a HP stat.

We need more games that go bump in the night, so fun!!!

Hector, you put 8pm EDT above. When I click on the calendar it changes it to 7:00am CST. I thought EDT was Eastern Daylight Savings, does it mean something else? Unfortunately I cannot join at either time.

[Facepalm]. Oops, the calendar is correct but my forum thread was off by 12 hours. Should say morning (a.m.), not evening. Now corrected. Thanks, NotRussellCrowe.

A great choice--and a good dilemma to have. I look forward to your after-action report.

Hello, the setting sounds intriguing, I'd love to play. I haven't played any SW game yet, but I have the book, so I have a rough idea how the rules work.

Welcome, Nemori! Savage Worlds is a balance of rules detail and quick-moving playability, with an emphasis on playability. It's easy to pick up, and the Fantasy Grounds ruleset for Savage Worlds is very, very well supported, so that makes it easier on the players, too. It'll be a fun run.

I can relate. I have an 18-month old. However I can trade mornings with my wife to cover him.

This does tend to mean I'm gaming a bunch with the Europeans, Aussies, Kiwis, since their time slots match up with my baby-free time windows. Go figure.

We have three of five players booked for this event--a couple spots still available for those who want to join the fun!

We had a great investigation by Miles Wallace, P.I., Detective Luther Galvin, and Officer Ambrose Kane. They staked out a mob office, then stormed in to the rescue when gunfire broke out. The lawmen were narrowly successful after a series of horrifying encounters that resulted in not one but TWO heart attacks from fright (along with a major phobia).

Here are some views of the action:

This scenario was a lot of fun - thanks for running it for me.

It is worth noting that a life of whiskey and cigarettes does not set you up well for terrifying encounters. Heart attacks aplenty :O
