How can I use a custom portrait that my friend drew or an image I like that I found on the internet? Instead of the ones that come stock?

Put the image in your Fantasy Grounds portrait folder.

Suggest you keep the size below 250x250px (and keep it square) to minimise mem usage.

You should encounter some .ppk files in the portraits folder. These are a form of zipped up folders. You can unzip these files using a program like 7-zip to unpack them to get an idea of what the official portraits are set up like. Also can use the same process in creating your own portrait packs in the same manner zipping up your custom portraits and then renaming the .zip to .ppk.

I'm trying to do this for FG unity. Could you give me a step by step of how to put in my own custom image?

On the top left of the start screen you’ll see a small folder icon. Click on it to open the FGdata folder. You should see a folder called portraits, open it and drop your portrait in that folder. Start FG, open you character and then click on the blank space on the top left of the first page and it will open the portraits folder. Select your image and you are done.

And welcome tonFG.

Hello, I am attempting to create some portraits for COC7. I have tried a variety of sizes, but when I put the portrait on the map (from the combat tracker) it is always blurred. I have attached a photo. What would be the best sizes to use do you think? https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=50606&stc=1&d=1640655224

I don't now about CoC, but most rulesets reduce portraits to 63x63 pixels. Not very large at all. For higher resolution images, I have the GM add them as campaign images and then share and link to them

Yeah, the "Adventure Module Creation Best Practices" document (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?33538-Adventure-Module-Creation-Best-Practices) says 63x63 pixels for portraits.

Ok thanks, I have tried AD&D ruleset with the same images and they are much clearer.

I's ruleset specific. I suspect in time most rulesets will be updated to allow higher resolution. But for now, it's a holdover from the original architecture.

The base portrait files can be larger, but they are sampled down to the correct size for each portrait set. We've upped the original samples to 100x100 or 200x200 dimensions in newer portrait packs from us; so that the portrait assets can be used in more places or in place of tokens.

6000x6000 is definitely not the best size to use.

Additionally - upsizing a JPG/BMP/PNG/GIG image in a photo editor does not improve its quality. In almost all situations you will have worse quality. At best you will have the same quality.

Has this been updated in the rulesets too? If so I need to update my Adventure Best Practices as well as the Wiki needs updating.

No, the portraits are still sampled down for each use case in the rulesets to match the controls they are used in.
(top character list = 72x72, token = 100x100, chat = 40x40)

Since portrait assets can be used in more places now (on GM side), such as tokens or images; higher resolution images can still be useful.

However, the default should be updated to 100x100 in your Best Practices.
