What material would you consider Essentials?

I would say at least this:
Dungeon Master's Kit
Heroes of Shadow
Heroes of the Elemental Chaos
Heroes of the Fallen Lands
Heroes of the Feywild
Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms
Monster Vault
Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale
Rules Compendium
The Shadowfell

What else?

Martial Power, 2 volumes I think
Arcane Power
Divine Power
Psionic Power

These books have awesome abilities and feats in them for specific classes. Really help round out and make characters special and more customized.
Oh, and the Adventures Vault, 2 volumes also i believe. So many awesome magic items in those!

Oh yeah, and there are two more player handbooks with more races and classes. The monk is in volume 3. So bad ***

I don't think the OP means "what materials do you consider to be essential to playing D&D 4th edition?" but rather I think he means "what materials do you consider to be a part of the D&D Essentials line of products?".

Lol! Yeah ur probably right. I guess I dont even consider the product lines separate since the 4th ed materials are so seamless. But still, my book recommendations ARE essential! I made the most awesome character referencing at least 5 books.
