I've only used d100 and d20 systems this far but now I've gone and ordered Hollow Earth Expedition that uses something different. Anyone that has some insight to which ruleset that might give me the best chance to run a game of HEX over FG with the least amount of preparation (appart from the adventure in itself)?

Unless there's a community ruleset out there somewhere, try CoreRPG (with or without the MoreCore extension). The generic ruleset can cope with most systems, just more manual than ones that handle dice rolls and stuff for you.

how would I go about creating a d1? the more dice extension for the core ruleset gives me a d0 (useless), d2, and a d3. i'd like to make the d0 into a d1, but how?

A d1 would always return a value of 1. You can do that just using the number 1 without any dice or d0+1.

If you're looking for 0-1 range, you can use d2-1.
