View Full Version : first time as DM in 5.0 session/First time as DM on FG

I had some IT issues in seeking to first run as DM which Doug Davison was really helpful with and finally got everything to work with FG.

So even thought I own all the 5.0 FG material I decided to run LMOP and not run anything too big yet. Anyway, I ran a first 2 1/2 hour FG non-game session this Wednesday for the players as none had yet played FG, so I could run through how FG works, help them create their characters (they didn't want to run pre-gens), and finally run a sample brief combat with a masked map once all basic FG buttons, etc., had been covered.

While we covered almost everything on Wednesday, I had not expected how difficult it would be to keep their attention for the first 1/2 hour or more when they were having far too much fun experimenting in all the various ways to roll the dice.

For Thursday, being the actual session, I had before the session:

(1), created on the notes in FG character backgrounds for the new characters after reading loads of great articles as to how to better connect the players to both LMOP and to Hoard of the Dragon Queen, etc. (I intended to open the pc's character sheets and paste the backgrounds in),

(2), created a few replacement maps using autodesk pro and dropped these into the campaign's images folder (as two of the players had started the session in a live game but not gotten very far),

(3), bought a program (MorphVox Pro) to have the option to change my voice when speaking as a monster or npc (which I tested before the session with another pc connected to teamspeak and the sound was clear).

(4) made change to Teamspeak to fix it. I had always had trouble before with Teamspeak as with either one of my two headsets the microphone would always stop working every 5 minutes or so. I believed that this was finally resolved when earlier this week I successfully tested teamspeak for over 25 minutes straight, etc. with no problems .

In the Thursday session of course,

(1), I could not figure out how to copy the backgrounds from the notes to the pc sheets,

(2),my maps failed to appear in the folder I had placed them,

(3) Morphvox worked over Teamspeak but the sound was apparently not the same quality of sound as what my daughter heard on another computer logged into teamspeak. I had to stop running it.

(4), after about 10 minutes or so, Teamspeak failed me again and I had to keep going through the set up on Teamspeak to get it run for just another few minutes before it would without any warning again leave me speaking but not being heard.

Despite the above, all somehow went well as the players enjoyed themselves and we will be playing again next week. We were on Thursday able to play on without the backgrounds, I quickly decided to carry on with the included maps, we turned off Morphvox (which I had high hopes for), and we decided to play over Skype which worked perfectly.

So, what did I learn? I should not make it so complicated for my first time as dm on FG. Keep it simple starting out. Use the purchased modules with it's maps and character backgrounds. Don't use a voice changing program or any such extra's until you have had a few successful normal sessions work well. If you cannot use Teamspeak successfully you should simply go ahead and use something that reliably works for everyone and not keep trying and inflicting this on others.

Two weeks ago I decided I had to leave a really enjoyable FG campaign I was in as a player because I was disrupting the game by having to constantly re-login to Teamspeak and them wondering was I there or not.

The only dissappointing thing is I would really have liked to be able to use teamspeak properly so I could perhaps eventually be a gm for one of the FG Con events. I notice when looking to be a gm at these, that you are informed you must use Teamspeak. As it stands, I understand why for new player's ease of joining events it makes sense not to have multiple programs being used. However, surely there would be other FG users who are having actual insurmountable issues with Teamspeak and simply cannot use it but would like to gm at one of the FG Con events.

Sorry for the rant,

dmkevin

Hi dmkevin - well done! It gets easier. Plus some points below....

1. The teamspeak server is in a data centre in Atlanta and a power station failure caused 4 reboots of the server in prime time for you american players... :(
2. Dont over complicate things for yourself - or your players. there is soooooooo much to learn you cant possibly learn it all so quickly and you dont need to - honestly
3. images cannot go in subfolders. they can go in images and... well thats it - just in images.
4. morphvox may have been due to teamspeak but it could also have been due to your upload bandwidth. when a player connects for the first time they have to download (for 5e with the players handbook shared) over 30mb. each. and that is uploaded from your computer. make sure you havent shared anything you dont need to. eg - if you have PHB that is all you share for LMoP until you share your first image or map. later you might share a players companion book but again - that is about it. dont share modules or other manuals like the DMG. allow each player to get fully downloaded before you try music next time (they should be almost fully downloaded now - they will typically only sync new stuff from now on).

5. i just read where you have been having longer term teamspeak issues. we say you must use the fgcon teamspeak server for fgcon to ease the number of things new players must deal with as they go from game to game over that weekend. certainly you are not limited to this teamspeak server for your own events. im happy to do some troubleshooting with you. send me a pm if you want to do this.

i also learnt something last week with regards to teamspeak... if for some reason you are running fantasygrounds.exe as an administrator - eg you right click and run as administrator or you have modified the shortcut to do this it will cause you issues with teamspeaks push to talk.

Hello fellow person in a sensible timezone :)

Don't be sorry, its cool to hear your experiences. I would say hang in there. It might take a few sessions but it will calm down once everyone is set up and familiar with everything. I find that once you are over the initial hurdles it actually becomes easier to DM online than at tabletop.

To try and address some of your issues

1) You can copy by holding down ctrl and c and paste using ctrl v
2) not sure what happened here. On the images window there's a button on the top left that opens up the folder so you can check (I guess you knew this but just checking)
3)I own morph vox and have had some fun with it. I did find that a lot of the voices were difficult to understand with the default settings. The best one I think was the 'manly man one' or something like that. You can actually do a lot with just that. I had success with the others by changing some of the settings and also I like to to pre record set scripts using them. In either case, I'd agree with you, it is one more thing to think about and I would probably leave it for the first few sessions and introduce it later
4) I am not sure why teamspeak is being mean to you. I usually find it stable, and its great as it doesn't use too much internet juice. I am sure someone else here is better with teamspeak than me.

Anyway, stick with it. I'd say that if your players had fun the session was a success :)

Thanks to Damned for looking at my Teamspeak. It appears that there was a problem with the permissions for teamspeak, and separately I was running this as administrator which is NOT correct. Perhaps of more importance to anyone having trouble with teamspeak, I was including a lot of extra images I had placed into the images folder (some into subfolders which does not work in any event) quite a few of which were 2,000 or 3,000 mb or larger. I am embarassed to say 2 or 3 were over 8000 mb. I have after taking Damned's advice to have a max of 1000 mb but preferably under 500 mb or so and can see that once reduced the images are effectively the same. and downloaded a free image reducer. I found "light image resizer 4" which can be used within the folder of the image you want to reduce. Also I am going reduce the number of extensions I have running. Admittedly I don't really know how to use them properly in any event. It appears to now be working fine.

Thanks Skellan, I appreciate your post. I had on the night totally forgot the ctrl-c and cntrl-v option, which I did at some point pick up on but on the night I simply forgot why "cut and paste" were nowhere to be found.

My 8 year old daughter was listening to all the voices from another laptop elsewhere in the house and confirmed which voices were definitely the clearest and I used only those. I think now with teamspeak fixed and me not taking so much bandwidth on the upload with all the books, images, etc. I was pushing to the players, it may work better.

I had chosen what I thought was a simply a deep man's voice but the elven npc retaining the party in the tavern came across sounding like beelzebub himself and the players had a good laugh. I may need to look at turning down the strength of the modulation, heh heh. I will leave this though until I get more sessions under my belt.

Regards,

dmkevin

Not sure if it an option for you and your players but I would switch to skype for your in-game voice chat. Much better quality sound, and it's free. My group consisting of 6 players and the GM (me) form a group call and it works great.

Skype is generally an always on mic and uses a lot more bandwidth than Teamspeak. If running Skype the recomendation is that someone else be the Skype host as it apparent;y uses less GM bandwidth that way. Ultimately there are no bad voice options - its up to everyones preferences.

Damned,

Thanks for this update. I have run into this issue and did not realize that could be the problem. If I start TeamSpeak as administrator also do you think that would help? I was think that in Windows running two programs at different privilege levels might be this issue. I was running FG as administrator because of that other issue that kept giving a database write error. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Hey Doctordrew the best bet is to fix the permissions issue and not run as administrator.
Launch Fantasy Grounds.
Click on Folder Icon (top right) and then navigate up one folder level.
Right click on Fantasy Grounds and choose Properties > Security.
Choose Edit
Choose either the Everyone or the Users object and grant them Write and Modify.
Save.
Close Fantasy Grounds and restart it normally - without and elevated permissions.
This will leave FG working properly and windows wont stop push to talk keys getting sent to Teamspeak.
