View Full Version : Soundboards for your ambiance?

Hey, all you music streaming GMs.

What have you been using to stream ambiance to your players? Some use virtual audio cable and link it to a media playlist or virtual audio source.

I've been looking for a soundboard that combines ad-hoc sounds with ongoing streams and haven't found one save for professional sound control stations such as Rivendell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUlZWymR3-4):

I'm currently in the process of setting up Rivendell, but it's not a trivial affair, what have you been using?

Syrinscape doesn't let you upload your own tracks. And from what I hear, they want to 'rent' out that software with respect to their soundset creator. Which doesn't make much sense if I'm using my own sounds. If they offer a purchase option, I'd reconsider them.

Untill I figure out Rivendell, I'm using Mixxx (https://www.mixxx.org/)

Ahhh, I didn't realize you meant to use your own sound collection.

I use syrinscape at times, but also use Soundplant. It lets me map music files to my keyboard.

Syrinscape does indeed let you purchase the sound content, a la carte--you play it through their application. Not sure if that meets your needs.

I want to figure this out myself but haven't carved out the time to play with it yet. There are other threads in the forums that speak to this general topic...

You sub to Syrinscape and keep all the content you got while you were subbed.

You sub to Syrinscape and keep all the content you got while you were subbed.

With a sub you gain access to all their sounds. When your sub ends you lose access to all of it save for the packs you purchased.

Their soundset creator is for subs only.

I'm not in the business to rent the ability to play my own sounds.

Sound plant looks interesting, I'll have to scope out a linux equivalent.

Mixxx is great and allows me to modulate my tracks on the fly during stream, but I can only load 2 decks and 4 samples at a time.

Well, i don't know if you can upload your own stuff to this place, but i use this for ambience in my tabletop games.

Not quite. You keep new content released while you were a subscriber and keep any packs you purchased. The basic app is also available regardless of subscription. Explained here : https://syrinscape.com/faq/

Here's a gem I found if you use teamspeak.

Note: has some problems on Linux, looks useful for windows users though.

Probably not right to talk about other VT's in the forums, but we keep Roll20 open behind FG just for its Jukebox feature. It's simple enough.

I use Tabletop audio

Does anybody have a solution for synchronized playback while playing FG over the internet? A lot of these play back ambient music, and Teamspeak is probably the right tool for this, but few actually are designed to play the same audio for each player on their separate computers.

What are you all using for that? I use Roll20, but am looking at Teamspeak. Sadly a few of my players are technically inept and have issues using something as simple as Hangouts. Teamspeak might be a little too advanced for them.

Use Teamspeak and assign one of the channels to your sound prog. That's discussed in a thread on how to setup your game for streaming (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?24282-How-to-make-an-overlay-and-setup-OBS-for-streaming!).

Incredible and thanks. I'm actually setting up Teamspeak tonight.

And now I understand how Griffin McElroy does the music and voice effects on The Adventure Zone.

In case you weren't aware (sorry if you already were), there is a community provided, free to use, TeamSpeak 3 server, info here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?17071-Voicechat!-Community-TeamSpeak3-Server So you'll just need to setup a TeamSpeak3 client, no server required! :)

Ken L, I know you use Linux. Did you use a specific program to get this working? Are you using ALSA or PulseAudio?

Edit: I just saw your setup in another post. That's how I've done it in the past.

this is a gem I been using for a few years now...https://soundboard.liquidoxide.com/
allows me to define my own sounds and mix upto 36 items and if that is not enough you can launch another instance with separate definitions.
hope this helps someone.

I've been thinking of setting up an icecast server, but that was more work than I really needed. With Damned allowing access to the FG server, this turned out to be a better way over all.
