View Full Version : How do I remove a link symbol from the character sheet?

I'm trying to create a character using my D&D 5e Player's Handbook, and I don't own the Core Class Pack so I have to manually create some things. For instance, I wanted to use the Gladiator (Entertainer variant) background, which doesn't exist in the SRD/Basic rules so I can't drag & drop it. I was just playing around and dragged in the Acolyte background before I decided I wanted Gladiator. The problem is that the little red dragon symbol linking to the Acolyte background is still there even after I changed all the attributes back and manually built out my Gladiator features and typed Gladiator in the text box. How do I get rid of the link? Or better yet, is it possible for me to create a background note that's linked on the character sheet where I can type in the explanation of my "custom" background (not really custom since it's from the PHB, but custom in FG since it doesn't exist in my copy of the software since I don't own the class pack)?

The short answer is that you can't.
Once you've dragged that in you can't then delete it. Furthermore you can't edit it either. You can actually overwrite it by dragging in another background but that will then really mess things up.
The only way that you can add a custom background is by using par5e (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27297-Par5e) to create it and then drag/dropping that into the character sheet. You can't create a custom background from within Fantasy Grounds - at least not one with any kind of text in it. You can certainly give the character the benefits of the background such as skill and tool proficiencies as well as languages etc and you can create abilities in the abilities tab. But you can't do anything about that little Dragon.

Hmm... that's unfortunate. I downloaded PAR5E but was told that I needed to install some kind of Java framework or something and didn't think I wanted to do that. I dunno. Is PAR5E a tool that I should really have if I'm going to be using Fantasy Grounds a lot?
How complicated would it be to just create a simple background that doesn't necessarily have to have any actual scripted stuff happening, but just contains some text that I will type in from the rulebook explaining the background? How long might it take to create something like that?
And PAR5E is really the *ONLY* way to do it? There is no way to do it by manually making a .mod file (which seems to consist of a couple XML files and a PNG thumbnail... but I couldn't figure out how to make one that works in the 5 minutes I already devoted to it)?

Par5e is the only method to create something like a background since as I say you can't create it within Fantasy Grounds like you can for an NPC or an item for example. Since it can't be created it can't be exported either. As I said however you can create it on paper and give the character the skills etc relating to the background. You could, I think, do it by adjusting the exported character xml but that will depend on how well you know xml. Whatever I doubt it would be a 5 minute job.

When you create your character (next time) just add the background in manually.
Par5e is not the only way to do it but it is ultimately the easiest way to build a module for re-use.
I think that somewhere the Witch Hunter class may have been Par5ed and uploaded here - you could pull that apart and look at the XML - you will see that it is fairly involved.

The easiest way is to just type in the background name directly, and manually add in the features needed. Just like a paper character sheet. No need for data modules unless you want to go that route.

Thanks for the. Actually I did already add the feature manually, it's no problem for me to do that. I just didn't like that I had the red dragon link on the right-side of the Background section of the character sheet and it linked to the Acolyte background. Just a little personal annoyance, I didn't want to have to create an all-new sheet just to remove the link, so I was wondering how to do it, and apparently you can't unless you drag in another one. I went ahead and downloaded PAR5E and am currently in the process of learning it and creating my Gladiator background to be able to drag & drop onto the character sheet to replace my incorrect link with a link to the actual background haha. It seems to be going well, I'll check in again if I have success.

Try a middle click on the link. Not sure it will work, but sometimes links allow this to clear the field.

By middle click, do you mean click in the mouse wheel?
Unfortunately I'm on a laptop and don't have a mouse connected, so I don't think I can do a middle click.
It's OK for now though because I figured out how to create the full Gladiator background in the PAR5E tool and got it working! So now I've got my actual character background in the game and linked on the character sheet, which is great.
It was easier than I expected, actually.

And this is what I learned today. Middle mouse clicking does indeed clear the background field.

Indeed, par5e isn't too hard to get the hang of and backgrounds is a good place to start since they're fairly straightforward.
