So I am trying to port certain elements of older AD&D modules to 5e.

One area I am have problems with is the innate spells in swords and other items.

Such as a +2 swords that detects traps, or detects evil.

Can I join a scroll With the spell and a sword to get what I am looking for?

Or should I try to join a rod with the spell effect and certain charges and fore that with a sword?

Any advice would be appreciated

You can only forge items that are the same type. So you can forge two weapons or two rods or two scrolls but not a sword and a scroll or a rod and a sword.

For the kind of thing you are looking for you'd need to manually create an item - in other words not in the forge. You can, for example, drag a spell into the description box of an item to create a link to that spell.

You can start with your magic sword from the magic items list and just edit it manually to add the things you want.
