WELCOME ABOARD! I understand what you mean, but once you get going it will fall into place.

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious, but what is meant by "toon" in this context?

There's also a detailed walk-through of character creation here (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet).

And there's some other links here (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27296-Guides-videos-and-other-helpful-information) which you might also find useful.

Some early MMOs called their characters "toons" and sadly the term has stuck. I always just assume anyone who calls a character a "toon" grew up only playing Toontown Online (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toontown_Online) (which at the time was a children's game) and just doesn't know any better.

This discussion (https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/77192/what-is-the-source-for-calling-your-characters-toons) seems to indicate that people use it as a term of detachment between you and your character. Similar to how in modern MMOs you end up having several characters you play rather than a single one that represents "you" in the world.

No it originated with Toon! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toon_%28role-playing_game%29) :)

I'm game with several people who refer to them as toons and I'm pretty sure they picked it up from Everquest and World of Warcraft. They were all RPG gamers long before playing MMOs, so I have no idea why that "stuck" with them. I find it weird as well, but to each their own.

I saw the term used for a DC/Marvel supers game once, and always just assumed that it was some shortened form of the "cartoon". Live and learn.

I'm with ddavison here. I first heard this term being used for World of Warcraft characters and it is related, I believe, to the cartoon style graphics in that game.

However in pen and paper RPG's (and indeed video RPG's outside of MMO's) I've only ever heard the term character, and very rarely avatar.
