As the DM using D&D 5E ruleset, how can I take control of a player character to run them as an NPC if the player cannot make a game?

As GM open the character sheet from the Character selection screen, or if they're on the combat tracker click the link to open the character sheet. Then make all the rolls etc. from the character sheet. Targeting should work as usual - left-click on the PC token to select them and CTRL+left-click on the target token, or use the targeting option in the CT. It's just like being a player, the only difference is that the portrait won't appear on the top left of the desktop.
