My group and I like to refer to our one-shot / dream sequences as "VR simulations" (a la Metal Gear Solid).
My group of 3 (normally 4 -hence the one shot) had to defend a recently occupied outpost from a swarm of undead. They linked up with a small squad of Lord's Alliance soldiers who were escorting villagers from danger and subsequently bunkered down for the inevitable rush.
Many rounds later, the main gate had been breached and a mixture of undead and demons had scaled the rear walls. The party's grandmaster martial artist was isolated from the rest of his allies after slow falling over the wall and was engaged in a grappling match with the wight out front (but not before summoning a Giant Hyena with his Bag of Tricks to hold the east entryway). Our dark knight was in the midst of withdrawing back towards the party's crusader hoping for some healing after he cut a swath through the initial rush of undead who conducted the main frontal assault. The party's crusader had already retreated back to the west end of the fort in response to a new group of foes that had started scattering the huddled villagers.
We had a blast. Thought I'd share.
