View Full Version : How do I do attacks and damage in 5e D&D FG from text rather than NPCs

Hi there, still loving FG after years of gaming with it- just gets better and better, thanks for that.

Here's the issue in the text of a bought 5e adventure, for example LMOP it says, either (and this isn't word for word)-

Character must make a DC 10 dexterity check or takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage.

Or,

PCs in chamber must make a DC 15 constitution save or take 3d6 poison damage.

The text is not highlighted (not parsed?) so I can't click on it to perform the attack, or generate the check- and remember this is in a FG store bought WOTC module. How do I get FG to do the work for me in-game, obviously if it was on an NPC I'd double click on it with creatures targeted and FG will do the work. How do I do it when the attack/check or whatever is just in the text.

At present I get the player to make the check/save in the dice tower and then apply the damage as needed- however if I'm doing this for three PCs at once I then have to take into account the type of damage (bludgeoning or poison for example) and then calculate the damage for each PC depending on their resistances, immunities et al.

Is there a quick way of replicating the check in FG- targeting the PCs and then letting it roll.

Or what do I type in the chat window to make the damage specific (bludgeoning or poison for example).

Sorry for appearing dumb, I'm loving the stuff FG does just get stuck every now and then on things I figure there should be a quick way of making it happen but can't seem to find it.

Our adventures are here, if anyone is interested-

Thanks in advance.

Make an NPC called "Chamber Trap" or similar and add some actions to it. FG recognizes attack text (some info here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?23204-NPC-Monster-attacks-How-to&p=200419&viewfull=1#post200419 ) and saving throw text. It doesn't look like base ability/skill checks are recognized.

Using saving throw text:

PCs in chamber must make a DC 15 constitution saving throw or take 3d6 poison damage

PCs in chamber must make a DC 15 constitution saving throw or take 3d6 poison damage

Which works as follows when added to the combat tracker and a PC is targeted:

The 5E ruleset doesn't have any mechanism for traps to have their own special records in order to generate rolls like this. It has to be done manually, as you are doing.

From our reviews of the traps found in the books so far, they are usually simple or not similar with each other, so we haven't had a clear idea of what a trap should look like officially.

I just recently saw a request on our wish list for trap records, so we'll probably revisit this in the future.

That's the winner, and of course why didn't I think of that- thanks kindly, I'll get it sorted.

I've created a bunch of trap NPC's for use in my Undermountain Campaign. Let me know if ou want to see how I've done some of them. I've also done some hazards this way too (webs, slime, etc)

I for one would love to see a couple of example traps and hazards, LordEntrails, just to steal you good ideas and approaches!

Subscribing to the thread. Trenloe's solution looks very nice. And let us see those traps and hazards, LordEntrails! :)

Ok ok!
I haven't tested these yet. That was what was taking me so long. But, here are the various traps and hazards I've created to date for Undermountain. These should all be rules compliant, and I intend that they be able to be used for rolling etc, but I have yet to test them.

Thanks! I will try it during the weekend.

Nice work. If you change the wording in the Web hazard to 'On a failed save the creature is restrained' and in the Yellow Mold change 'becomes poisoned' to 'is poisoned' FG will add these effects automatically to the CT when the traps and hazards are dragged into it.

Those are awesome, LordEntrails! Thanks so much for posting. It makes me wonder if we could create a community collaboration module with interesting traps and hazards (organized by CR and theme.)

Thanks Zacchaeus! Are the phrases that are parsed documented somewhere? So I can get it right the next time.

They are not specifically documented, but the parsing algorithms are designed to parse the text as it appears in the Monster Manual. So, just borrow the text from an existing monster, and make edits to fit.
