Well I tried to create a character & its not really going well. I followed to the letter what's in the Youtube 5E tutorial I found on character creation, but what comes up in my client deviates from what they show right when the character sheets opens. Do I really have to have the Class Packs on top of what I've already purchased? I thought that by getting the 5E ruleset, plus the adventure I'm going to run (Horde of the Dragon Queen) I'd be pretty much set with everything I needed.

I got my client through Steam. With the base program being $39.99, the 5th Edition Ruleset $2.99, and the Hoard of the Dragon Queen adventure series is $19.99, I spent a total is $62.97. I'm starting to wonder if this is money well-spent. Is there a better tutorial or manual available?

Welcome to the forums!

There are two main ways to create a 5E character:

Manually enter all of the data into your character sheet.
Use library modules to enable drag/drop population of data.

Some info on the character sheet here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet

With item 2 you have two options - buy a library module or create your own library (takes a lot of time). The $2.99 Basic Rules module you purchased comes with some of the basics (4 classes, a few races, etc.). You will need to activate this module (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Library)to get access to the data in your library - modules don't open by default (it gives you the option to open only the modules you need).

If you want data from the PHB you'll either need to enter it manually (see this thread if this interests you: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?18123-Project-Par5e) or purchase one of the class packs. The pricing and availability of the official 5E data is controlled by WotC.

Hey RobStuff - as Trenloe says the Full Players Handbook is the Complete Core Classes and you will need to activate the D&D Basic Rules - Player and D&D Basic Rules - GM to be able to access them. Once you activate the Players rules set them to Allow Player Load so the players can access them.
The adventure you bought contains everything from the physical adventure all prepped in FG format.
The Basic Rules for $3 contain everything from the Basic Rules PDF (free) in FG format. If you use this and you stick to the classes and races included in the Basic Rules - Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, Rogue and Human, Dwarf, Elf and Halfling you should be pretty right. It is definitely a good way to get started. I started with the Basic rules before upgrading later to the full products.
