View Full Version : Questions about importing/exporting PCs between different hosts using Demo Version

I'm about to DM my first Adventurers League game using the Ultimate License. Before I post an ad for the game, I want to make sure I have all my bases covered. I'm confused about how players using only the Demo access their PCs for my game, and how they are able to take those PCs and join another DM's Ultimate License-hosted game later.

The scenario in my head is that I have 7 strangers sign up for my game. I do not ask for their PCs' xml files in advance of booting up my server, but I assume they have them on their end. When they log onto my server, are they able to import their PCs? When they click Import, are they presented with a choice of every PC (in the 5e ruleset) that they have "owned"?

At the end of the session, do the players need to export their PCs before logging off so they have an xml file, or can they always access their PCs through the Manage Characters function of the Demo (albeit without the ability to make modifications)?

I'm looking to forestall any hitches in the smooth handling of PCs coming from other AL games and then moving on to other ones, since that's the nature of Adventurers League.

Thanks!

When players join a game they have the choice of selecting a character which already exists in the campaign or importing a local character. By local I mean a character that exists on their hard drive. If they only have a demo license I'm not sure whether they can actually create a character without joining a DM who has the Ultimate license. If they can they will have the option to import.

Once created a character stays with that campaign and unless you clear the owner it will be seen on the player character screen as selectable when they join your game. Any characters created by another player won't be selectable. You have the option of clearing the owner of a character which would make it available to anyone who joined.

Players can't export characters, but as I say if a character exists on their own hard drive they can use it in any campaign they join. You can export characters once created (either by you or by a player who has joined your game) and import them into another campaign and such characters will be available to anyone who joins.

In your case I'd say you want to have players join your game and then create their characters. Those characters will then remain in that campaign. If the players want to use the same characters in a different campaign that you are also running then export them once created and before the campaign starts. You can then import them into the new campaign. Does this make sense?

Makes sense, Zacchaeus, thanks. Because this is Organized Play, the players will want to use their same characters not necessarily in another campaign that I'm running, but any other AL DM using an Ultimate License. That's why I'm hoping that the players can import and export their PCs freely, using the Demo Version.

Actually, I just booted up a Demo instance of FG, without entering in my license info, and it does appear that you can import and export.

Ah, very good. I've never used the demo license or had a player with one so I'm not sure what you can and can't do with it.

About a year (and thats a very vague 'about') the demo license was changed to allow offline character management. prior to the change you had to have a (now deprecated) Lite license to do character management.
