View Full Version : How to have NPC health bars/differentiate multiple NPCs?

I'm trying to run an encounter with a fair number of the same type of NPC, how can I link their tokens to their health in the combat tracker or differentiate the tokens?

I'm used to working with roll20 where I can drag as many NPCs of a given type as I want and track their health on the battlemap itself, is there a way to do this with Fantasy Grounds?

1. Create Encounter (click Encounter button at the top of the NPC window to pull up the list of encounters)
2. Drag NPC to Encounter. Set token if necessary.
3. Set quantity of NPC.
4. Push the button at the bottom of the encounter to populate the combat tracker.
5. Drag tokens from combat tracker to map. If you drag the tokens directly from the encounter, or from the NPC window, their health will not get linked to their tokens. You must drag from the combat tracker.

Optionally, from settings you can control whether your NPCs get numbered auto-increasing or randomly when they are populated into the combat tracker. Random is useful for disguising from your players how many there are.

You can also prepopulate NPC positions on the map by dragging the individual tokens from the encounter window onto the map. They will turn into check marks when they have been placed this way. Then, when you populate them using the button on the encounter window, the tokens will get automatically placed on the map as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Was deciding between using Fantasy Grounds for the first time for my game tomorrow or putting it off another week and crawling back to roll20, I think this is gonna let me make the switch. Still getting used to some of the changes but I'm enjoying the lua scripting.

You can also drag enemies straight into the combat tracker to add them to the current combat. Then add them to the map using their token in the tracker. Encounters are great if you have time to set stuff up ahead of time, but it often makes more sense to dump them straight into the combat tracker when modifying it on the fly.

Is there a way to set a default token for an npc?

Yep. Go to the NPC sheet and drag a token onto the gray circle in the upper right (that's an empty token). You'll have to unlock the sheet for editing first, if you haven't already done so (click on the lock in the upper right).

Clear your tokens from the Combat Tracker and Maps. Drag your players from their portraits (top left) onto the Combat Tracker. This links them. Add Encounters and NPCs to the Combat Tracker first - not the map. Then drag tokens from the Combat Tracker to the Map. This keeps them linked.
