New to D&D have been interested for awhile. Looking for a game of D&D 5e and interested in playing a rogue or monk. In the UK and work after midnight

I agree Damned, so many people want to play D&D but won't try other games. There are so many other fun games other than D&D to play

Amen to that Daedalus. If a player leaves my group for whatever reason recruiting new players to my WFRP3 game when the world and his wife wants to play DnD/Pathfinder is a nightmare. Ah well I guess it's quality rather than quantity that counts :)

What happens is that there are many people returning to the hobby after 20-25 years. And back then there weren't that many rpgs to chose from. That and the fact that people don't like to feel like n00bs (hate that word) and seem to mainly want to play in settings with elves and wizards and dragons makes it harder for GMs using other great systems to recruit indeed. But if you try hard enough you'll find players and make a few converts along the way. I have :)

Oh those are all good suggestions for recruiting for sure Mask of Winter. But trust me I'm very proactive when it comes to recriting and already do all of the above suggestions. If I didn't I would struggle to find ANY players whatsoever let alone the few I do. And as for DnD/Pathfinder I totally understand the 'returning to the game thing' but I think the issue goes beyond that. Unfortunately DnD rightly or wrongly is seen as the biiggest and best and to some even the be all and end all of this great hobby of ours. You can find as many poeople 'just starting out' as returning to the hobby who still think that all roads begin and end with DnD. A great shame but there it is. It's like people who've only ever listened to One Direction thinking that they know what music entails and don't need to listen to anyone else. Sad but true! Anyway that's the situation, no use bitching about it I know.

noelyuk i think the problem is that there is D&D and then there is everything else.
D&D 5/4/3.5/2/1/BECMI/OD&D and Pathfinder make up about 80% of the games being played. seriously.
the other 14,638 RPGs get the rest. And when you look at the next 10 after the D&Ds you probably leave 14,628 rpgs chasing less than 10% of the games/gamers.

Oh and its always been this way - except there wasnt 14,000+ games back in the old days, just a few score or more :)

Mask, I don't know how long you have been gaming but I have been gaming since '88 and even back then there was a choice. There are just role players and there are D&D players

noelyuk: You are right. Big is not always best. McDonald's is big in the fast food market, but it doesn't mean they server good food. They just serve popular food.

And as people thinking D&D is the beginning and the end, you are right. And somehow we need to get people out there to see that there are other games. Because people just playing D&D and nothing else hurts the hobby

Nowhere do I say there weren't any choices. I did start out with Lonewolf, Dark Eye and Warhammer followed by Rolemaster. Truth is, I don't feel threatened by D&D one bit and contrary to your belief I think it's good for the hobby. It raises the awereness that rpgs are still out there and it's a strong yet niche hobby.

I tend to think that D&D is not only good for the hobby but essential to the hobby. without the publicity and presence that only D&D commands this would be a dying hobby.

I disagree. If people are just playing D&D and nothing else then people can't find people to game with and they leave the hobby, meaning there are less people in the hobby which I don't think is a good thing. And I think the hobby can survive without D&D. I got into this hobby because a group pulled me in and I was unaware of D&D

This hobby, despite what people think can survive with D&D. Hell, because of the OGL (Which was a stupid move on WOTC's Part) Pathfinder is more popular than D&D
