Hi,

My group is considering picking up FG, and the issue of running multiple characters per player came up (specifically in the circumstances of a PC & their animal companion/familiar/eidolon or what have you, or of a player being absent and another player taking over his character for the session in addition to their own). Is this something that FG can handle easily? Assuming it can, how then would a returning player reclaim their character from the player who was subbing for them? Is it just a matter of the GM somehow clearing the ownership of the character? Is there a limit to how many characters a given player can control?

A player can control any number of characters. The GM can clear the control of a character to allow another player to take control of them. Everything you mention FG can do easily.

Character selection and GM clearing ownership is all done through the Character Management screen: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Character_Management

Once a player has selected their PCs, they open/close their character sheets by double-clicking on the portraits on the desktop; which also has the effect of activating this PC for text chat character labeling, etc..

That's excellent news; thanks for the quick response! Fantasy Grounds is looking better by the minute... :)

Welcome Lurch! Yes you can. Happens all the time in my games. If a key character/player is away someone else picks them up.

Pro tip: The controlling player should use different dice colors for each character (you dice color is stored for the active character) as a reminder of which one you are controlling. Single clicking a character portrait you control will switch active characters, and the changing dice color is a visual indicator of that.
