How to add tokens to npcs

How do I add tokens to npcs? I feel like I should remember how to do this but it's been a while.

There's a blank circle in the upper right where you drag the token too.

Check that the NPC isn't locked when you do this - the padlock icon in the top of the NPC window should be open.
