View Full Version : Question regarding the FAQ, licensing, and terms of service

Hi! I'm thinking about buying this and talking my group into buying this, since the character builder was one of the things that we really liked about 4e. (No offense, but we're pretty set with free virtual tabletops, so that's not the main reason of my focus.) However, I have a question regarding licensing - particularly, the Ultimate license.

For context, in the license comparison (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/buyFG/#licensecomparison), it says that one ultimate license covers all players in the group. However, in the FAQ (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/faq.php…), it says that a license is for one system, and may not be transferred to any other system; it also states that "as long as no two players in a game are using the same license, the software will assume the above to be true." (As an aside, the very next question addresses how to transfer the license to another system, which seems to contradict that it's not allowed to be transferred. I do appreciate being able to transfer it to a newer computer, though!)

My questions are as follows:

If the group switches around who is DMing, could they collectively buy an Ultimate license which is passed around the group members, so long as only one person is using the Ultimate license at a time? Or would that violate the terms of service? (The FAQ makes it clear that it could be done, but I'm unsure if it's allowed by the terms of service.)
If a group can pass around the Ultimate license, could they also "pass around" the class packs in the same manner? In particular, could the class packs be associated with the Ultimate license, which every user uses to make their characters offline, then connects with the free license to play with? Or would every player (even the ones with the free license) need to purchase the content packs? Once again, I'm most interested on whether it's allowed, not if it's possible. (It'd make the most sense to me that everyone would need the content packs for offline access, but I figured I'd ask.)

Thanks for the work! It looks super handy.

Purchases are for one user only - both the FG licence (be it a full or ultimate licence) and the library content purchased.

You can't pass an ultimate licence around between different users - if you plan to have different GMs then you are best each getting a GM (full) licence each. You can get a buy 3 get one free package deal on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/252690/

However, each GM will have to purchase the 5E (or other commercial FG products) they wish to use in their game.

Thanks! That's what I had figured, but the wording had me a bit confused, haha.

If you regularly transfer GM's it's suggested that that GM sign up for the Ultimate License subscription for the length of time they are the GM. And then the next GM picks up the subscription, the campaign can be emailed to the next GM if it's being continued.

I don't believe that the class or complete packs can be handed around like this.

The Subscription method would probbaly be the best way as Nylanfs says - but this doesnt support (at this stage) and cheaper way of having the 5e content available for all.
It has been suggested that SW might offer content subscriptions in the future too...

Possibly. But no one plays every game!
And if they do - I wanna know where their time expanding machine is.
