View Full Version : Connection Problem...still

Ok...here’s the ongoing saga. I can’t get my players to connect to Fantasy Grounds and the Test feature fails. At one point I had Hamachi installed and thought that I had found a success path (the Test feature worked). But when my friend tried to connect the next day he couldn’t and the Test feature was failing again. I have no idea what may have changed. To be truthful I don’t feel confident that I was using Hamachi correctly and may have to give it a second shot (I have uninstalled it at the moment). But before I retry Hamachi need some peer checks to see if I’m missing something. Understand that I’m not IT savvy by any stretch! I've read blog after blog to get this far with no real change. Here’s what I know...

Windows 7
firewall disabled
Static IP address for TCP/IPv4 established

Avast Premier 2015 AV
Firewall Enabled
Application Rules allowing Fantasy Grounds and in/out port 1802

Cable Modem: Arris TG862Gv2
Firewall disabled
Just in case: Virtual Server 1802-1802 added along with Port Trigger for port 1802
Just in case: DMZ enabled
ISP says port 1802 is not blocked

Netgear WNDR3700v3
Port Forwarded 1802 to TCP/IPv4 addressing static IP address for Win7
UPnP enabled with port map for 1802

Things that I have tried:
“Localhost” connects with two instances of Fantasy Grounds running.
I can connect two instances using the Host IP address.
Wife’s computer connects using the Host IP address.
With Fantasy Grounds running the “netstat -a” command shows that port 1802 is listening.
Using canyouseeme.org cannot see port 1802.
With both Cable modem and Avast firewalls turned off still cannot see port at canyouseeme.org and Test feature still fails.

This is driving me a little crazy...Help!

What are your port forwarding and DMZ settings for the cable modem? i.e. where are they forwarding the traffic from the cable modem to?

As an aside - when using Hamachi the connection test will fail. This is expected, the reason to use Hamachi is because the connection test fails You can't use the FG alias with Hamachi, you have to use the IP address of the GM computer as indicated by Hamachi. damned did a very good thread with instructions on how to use Hamachi: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20309-GM-Connection-Issues-Tried-Everything-Try-Hamachi

Whatever you do, we highly recommend that you never turn off your windows firewall. That step is unnecessary and is not a safe way to operate.

*Edit: I see that you have avast firewall running. That is fine then. You just want to make sure that you have at least 1 firewall running at all times.

Cable Modem Settings:
Disable DMZ mode. You don't need this and it is unsafe to place stuff in a DMZ if you don't know what your are doing there.
Port 1802 trigger or virtual server should have your local IP address to the computer hosting the FG instance.
If there are two options that sound like they route that port to a local IP address, try only one option at a time. Save it, test FG and then undo it and try the other option if the first doesn't work.

Don't use Hamachi unless you are unable to configure your cable modem.

Ok...no matter what IP address I try to put into the Arris cable modem for the port forwarding I get the following pop up message: "The page at 192.168.0.1 says: Invalid IP Address. Invalid network address." The address listed is the cable modems address and its the only address that is accepted. It won't accept the TCP/IPv4 address I have assigned for my wireless adapter. I've included the link to the manual for my cable modem for reference. [URL="https://www.arrisi.com/support/documentation/user_guides/_docs/ARRIS_Router_Setup_Web_GUI_UG.pdf"]

Quick questions:
1. Are you connected via LAN/Ethernet or WiFi or Both?
2. Is the cable modem connected to the WNDR3700v3WAN or LAN interface?

Quick Solutions:
1. Make sure you are connected by LAN or WiFi and not both. Preferred is LAN.
2. If WNDR3700v3 and Cable modem are connected on WNDR3700v3 WAN port then you need UPnP on WNDR3700v3. Get the WAN IP Address of the WNDR3700v3 and on the cable modem Port Forward TCP (not TCP and UDP) 1802 to WAN IP of WNDR3700v3.

OP has a double NAT occurring (modem/router + WiFi router) and for some reason we couldnt get the double NAT or Double UPnP or some combination thereof working.
We tested connecting to modem/router via WiFi just for FG and that is working - OP will try it out and see if that works over the longer term.

Thanks for the help damned. True professional! I will try to link up with some players tomorrow but for now it certainly looks like you've given me a good alternative. I'll let you know If I hit any stumbling blocks.:)

I was able to get a player connected today! I believe I will be removing my router and sticking with just the ISP modem/router. Thanks again for the help damned!

So reading all of these threads what i gather is if youa ren't a network engineer or a serious tech head then you can't use this product.

I know you're frustrated, but posting in 4 different threads within minutes of each other isn't really going to help. I've replied in your first post here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?25239-Nothing-but-troubles with some questions (post #2) and a suggestion (post #3). Please work with me, and other community members who might be able to help, in a single thread - it'll minimise time wasting for both you and the community. Thanks.
