Woot!
FG Con 6 dates have been announced!
April 17th-19th 2015.

View the latest FG Con newsletter here: https://www.fg-con.com/?wysija-page=1&controller=email&action=view&email_id=25

FG Con 6 will run from Friday evening 17th April (Aus and NZ) thru until late on Sunday 19th (US and Canada). Thats nearly 70 hours of great games on offer for players to participate in, 70 hours for GMs to show case their latest creations and for everyone to meet new people and plan great and heroic adventures!

GM registration officially opens on February 2nd - we are just finalising some coding updates. Many of you will already know the drill and we hope to see a bunch of new GMs joining in the fun for this great event. Once again SmiteWorks have agreed to promote all Full Licenses to Ultimate for the duration of FG Con opening the games up to more GMs and Players!

Players - you cant sign up for games just yet - player registration will open on February 28.

Some of the highlights of FG Con 5 -

We ran 48 sessions - thats 23% more than FG Con 4.
We had over 280 bookings which is almost 50% more than FG Con 4.
We ran our first hangout sessions and recorded them live onto Youtube. The 4 Hangout Sessions were for new Players and GMs and can be found here: https://www.fg-con.com/latest-news/fg-con-hangout-recordings/

Sounds like an ideal medium to show off the upcoming All for One - Régime Diabolique setting for Savage Worlds. The weekend is booked for now, I am planning to run at least one session.

So - AstaSyneri - what is your preference?
To run a game in English or German?
We had 2 out of 3 German games go ahead at FG Con 5.

Since all my source material is in English, I usually prefer to run thing in the same language. Either would be possible.

It was much easier (for me) to recruit for English language games but it was great to see German and Swedish games being played.
You should choose what you are most comfortable with and we will do our best to help fill it - of course we need you to promote your sessions too!

Are there any more Hangout sessions planned? If I can work out how the broadcast thing works, I might try one of those. Maybe on the basics of CoreRPG ruleset building ... and trust me, it'll be basic :p

Itd be great to get a couple of new Hangouts going.
Especially on some different topics.

Hi all,

Myself and another DM are organizing a "semi-competitive" 5e session. We run, and at the end compare the results to see which group accomplished more of the goals. Unfortunately, with are both in the Far East. It would be really great if we could get a DM who lived in North America to join us. At this point, we are not yet committed to any specific details for the adventure, and will welcome any ideas.

Starts Friday evening New Zealand time and ends Sunday evening Hawaii time.

As far as central US time is concerned, that means early Friday morning to very late Sunday night.

This handy tool is mentioned in the GM guidelines for the Event https://www.timeanddate.com/

If you then click on "Time Announcer" you can create your event in the timezone you think, and then check it against the various timezones around the world to see who can fit into that timeslot comfortably.

For instance, your 8am Friday 17/04/2015 is New Zealand's 1am Saturday morning, so yes that is within the timezone.

Apologies for being slow to approve the events. Both Trenloe and I have been swamped with RL stuff and are not approving events as quickly as we usually do.
That will change shortly.

Thanks for running the 3 sessions - they look good!

Edit: There might be a TimeZone issue there too though - youve listed for 8pm UTC - we'll fix that before posting :)

Will we be allowed to run published/licensed games or do they all have to be original? and Do they need to be on-shot games or can it be something players would have to attend over time?

February 20th, 2015, 08:03
Hello Tassadar!
The only restriction we put on the games is that they be safe for younger players (If you really wanted to run something adult only we could talk about it).
All the PFS stuff will be Paizo material.
We have had people run 2 and 3 part sessions at previous FG Con's.
We really enourage you as a GM to run what you want and let the players decide if they want to participate :) Sometimes good games clash with others, time doesnt work for the players etc and a game doesnt run but most games do go ahead.
What do you have in mind?

Run a broadband speed test, there are several around. These will generally download a file, and then upload that same file, to test your download and upload speeds.

Just to expand on what damned said - absolutely, run published material if you like. Fantasy Grounds shares maps/artwork and other copyright material via encryption so players can only use that material while connected to you, they can't use it after. So it's OK using published (copyright) material at FG Con.

Regarding multi-session adventures. These have been ran at previous conventions - you'll probably end up not having exactly the same players for each session, although you may be lucky. Just be clear in your event posting which is part 1, 2, etc. and that it is an ongoing adventure that will pick up where the last left off.

Please make sure that you keep the game paced well and that you complete each session within the allotted time - many players will be booking into other sessions outside of your game and might be running from your game to the next.

Use pregens Whatever game you plan to run, use pregens for the PCs. This is a pretty standard convention approach and players will expect it (with the exception of organised play such as PFS and D&D Adventurers League, which have their own setup/rules for people using their own characters) and allows you to jump right into the game with just a small amount of time explaining to the players the PCs available and the players making a selection. This aids you in getting going with the minimum of hassle, not having to communicate with players before the game and review the PCs they come up with. It also allows you to make sure the party has a good balance and perhaps work in some role-playing links between the PCs. If a player contacts you saying they'd really like to bring their own character I'd recommend you just tell thing "this is a short convention scenario, we'll be using pregens" - it's just easier all round if you do that.

I will be running "The Tower Out of Time" using the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG system.

No experience is necessary - if you have played D&D before, then you can definitely handle DCC RPG. The rules are very streamlined and emphasize fast, simplified gameplay. The mood harkens back to classic swords and sorcery, with mysterious monsters (more Fiend Folio than Monster Manual) and unpredictable magic. Exploration and combat play out in theatre of the mind. I will display a map, but this is not a miniatures game. PC death is not uncommon, which injects a healthy dose of tension into the action.

I studied the one you sent me and watched Doug's video tutorial, so I don't think that will be a major problem this time. It would be nice if the character sheet entries did not sort alphabetically, and displaying attack/damage rolls for NPCs in the combat tracker would be really great. But, those are nit-picky things, not a big deal.

A little more about DCC RPG for the unfamiliar from a recent blog post (https://quasarknight.blogspot.com):

Whereas many fantasy RPGs and retro-clones are tightly-defined with genre-appropriate ideas and canon, this is not the case for Dungeon Crawl Classics. While there's plenty of room for iconic traditional fantasy, there is no shortage of strangeness which would not have a place in more tightly-defined games. One game session the PC might be infiltrating the dark tower of school's bone-clad necromancers to stop a dangerous ritual. The next session a meteor from space might crash near the village, from which emerges Rotol the Conqueror, Extra-Dimensional Alien Overlord who must feed on the brain matter of sapient humans to grow to full power.

A question with pregen characters. When all is said and done and I am running the adventure again in the future but with different players, how do I "reset" the character sheet back to the way it was when we first started? Is there no way to set a default or should I just keep a copy of it all setup in another folder, and just overwrite the used up character with the "fresh new one" when I plan to start the adventure over?

Well, that combat tracker is simply awesome! Just having hit points and attacks in there is excellent! I don't care too much about linking to PCs and NPCs. Combats do not get over-populated in my games.

Tassadar build your module up in a clean/fresh campaign and when its ready (for play test or ready ready) export it.
Use the exported module in your live games and you will be able to use and reuse the module (all reset) as often as you need.
When you need to update or make changes (say based on playing it) or you want to expand it go back to the original campaign make your updates and re-export.

You will likely find this feature very handy.

Thats the hope leozelig. You should (when finished) be able to use the 3 columns for whatever you want - not at this stage for dice rolling, but for tracking info for combat.

Hey Guys,
I'm playing in games Friday and Sunday, and it looks like you have plenty of DM's and games for all the days, but if the need arises for a substitute DM to fill in or take over in an emergency on Saturday, let me know and I'd be happy to fill in with a 5e D&D game, got plenty of material.

I am DMing a game with complete strangers for the first time. Does anyone have a list of questions / reminders / things they should do ahead of time that they send out to players? It would save me reinventing the wheel.

Thanks, Kevin

This is something I put together for the PFS GMs (edited to remove PFS stuff):

Dear player, Thanks for taking part in FG Con VI!

This email is in relation to the event AAAAAAAAAAAAA that you have registered a booking for.

I am <your GM><the con admin> for this game and we would like to make sure of a few things in advance of the event.

1. The FG Con event will be run using Teamspeak3 for voice communications. More information can be found here: https://www.fg-con.com/information/teamspeak/ Make sure this is setup and tested before your event so there are no delays in getting the game started. You must have a headset with integral microphone – using external speakers/microphones give too much feedback (even if using push-to-talk) and spoil the game for the GM and other players, so please make sure you have a headset with integral microphone. Also, please make sure you are playing the game in a relatively quiet environment – extra background noise will make you hard to hear.

2. Make sure Fantasy Grounds is installed and tested. More information here: https://www.fg-con.com/information/fantasy-grounds/

The GM/con admin will work with you in advance of the event to make sure that you are fully set up for the event and answer any questions you may have. If you haven’t used Fantasy Grounds before, please spend a bit of time familiarising yourself with the application – these set of videos are a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?annotation_id=annotation_2682206575&feature=iv&list=PLXaP4OoFR0gHBt6pNB0TLg2mSNf5deVQN&src_vid=O5XLiKjA7Cw

If you wish to comment on a specific event and have all those involved (GM and players) see your question/comment then please use the “Leave a Reply” section on the individual event detail page.

Thanks!

<GM/Admin name>

Thanks so much. This is exactly the sort of thing that I need. Do you have any advice for first timer FG Con DMs? I have been playing with veteran players for some time, so I have forgotten what things new players struggle with. What should I do to make this go as smoothly as possible?

Thanks.

The players may be both new to FG *and* 5E, so don't try to to do everything by the rules or use lots of automation within FG (especially effects). Let players roll and manually work out the result if they're struggling with using the FG interface. Try to show off the great things about FG without making new players think it's overly complex (which effects can be).

Also try to engage all of the players if you can.

Any suggestions to grab a couple extra players for your game prior to the end for this of us that not getting the full loadout in our group.

I can call on people I know however the reason for a con is to display to players that perhaps not tried it before.

April 5th, 2015, 09:49
Hello Ardem - yes the Con format is intended to open Fantasy Grounds and alternate game systems up to new players but we also need our regulars too! Sometimes a game or a time doesnt have as much mass appeal and will not fill up. I have plugged your game on G+ as has Doug and he has also posted it to FB I think. I have also put it on Enworld. Please do help round up some players too if you can. I have made over 90 posts on gaming groups and media but after a while more posting by me just becomes background noise.... Invite your friends, or invite gamers that havent played with you in a while. We have a couple of Savage Worlds and 5E games too that need a few more players. We even have a Pathfinder game being run by a very experienced GM that has 0 bookings - fortunately it is the only game that has no bookings - but we o have 7 games that need at least one more player to meet the GMs minimum numbers.

I hope damned that you did not think I was belittling any effort you guys have put in, which have already been huge.

I was just wondering on any thoughts or ideas to find a player or two, as I will aim to get a regular member to fill the slots.

Thanks again for all your and the crew efforts in the CON as usual you guys doing a top notch job. Really look forward to this think starting now.

Promoting FG Con on social media and rpg forums seem to be the most effective way. As Damian pointed out, since he's about the only one trying to fill in spots he'd appreciate if everybody helped out. But he's too nice to ask so bluntly. He isn't getting paid for that, this is community driven, which means we need everybody to help make the internet aware of FG Con.

Good luck with your game Ardem, it looks like fun. My plate is a bit full for the Con but otherwise I'd have enrolled.

There are a few spaces left in the Pathfinder (not society) one-shot For rent, lease or Conquest: https://www.fg-con.com/events/adventureaweek-b20-for-rent-lease-or-conquest/

A Pathfinder/3.5 Compatible Adventure for 4-5 level 7 PCs by Colin Stricklin.

There comes a point in every adventuring career when a guildhall becomes a necessity. After all, where is the fighter going to hang his trophies? Where is the wizard going to perform his arcane experiments? Fortunately for the PCs, Edgewaith Manor is free for the taking. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a fixer-upper. There's some really bad mold in the bathroom, the furnace is temperamental to say the least, and the whole place is infested with interplanar ants. Such are the joys of home ownership.

Even worse, a group of treacherous real estate agents want the house for themselves, and they'll stop at nothing to get it. Once the PCs gain access to the manor's magical deed, they will have to work quickly to rearrange the rooms, populate them with traps and troops, and prepare to defend the house. In this adventure, the party has the rare opportunity to build a dungeon for the GM!

This adventure has received rave reviews and was selected as one of the top 10 RPG products of 2014 by top Paizo reviewer ENDZEITGEIST, who said "A superb, genuinely funny, but still challenging module - Mind Blowing!"

A Pathfinder adventure of house hunting, or being hunted by a house... Familiarity with playing Pathfinder preferred.

Pregen PCs will be provided.

In preparation for the game I am running Saturday, I uninstalled Fantasy Grounds 3.0.12 and re-installed fresh from the website. The download came through once again as 3.0.12, this is the live version of 3.0.12 not test. I tried to take out my licence key and get the free version, still coming through as 3.0.12.

How do I get it back to 3.0.11 as the Guidelines say? I don't see any option to go back to 3.0.11, I've tried several times now.

We wouldn't normally approve a new event this close to the convention. But there's a lot of interest in 5E, so I'm going to allow it - I just hope people don't drop out of other games to join this... One group managed to reverse a curse on a small fishing village after being shipwrecked themselves, and another group managed to fight off over 40 Kobolds (with a little help) in one fight and defeat a 200 foot Ancient Red Dragon in another, where the Dragon got the drop on them! Glad you got going OK.

As an FYI to anyone reading this - we have a backup server just in case there are any issues with the primary - see the "Backup Server" section at the bottom of the FG Con Teamspeak server instructions: https://www.fg-con.com/information/teamspeak/

Only use this backup if you can't get into the main server and if you have sent a message to all of the players that you are switching.

Thanks to Ian Ward for letting us run through the "lovely" sewers of DNA/DOA.

It was definately worth getting up 4.30 in the morning to try a real Shadowrun ruleset in action. Bugs are inevitable when you make something, but it really showed great promise and the consensus was that we had a great time. FG is amazing for letting people from as diverse places such as Minnesota, Australia, and Denmark have a great time together.

I shall cherish the despair over my ruined suit, the "helicoptered" racist and other great remarks, such as "Whos' got the stinger missile", for a long time. Long live the future version of the Anarch's cookbook and its explanations for using plastique!

All in all, it was awesome.

There was some networking fault for approx 4mins on the Teamspeak server at 10pm AUS time. The server was up the whole period but everyone got kicked for approx 4mins. All the other groups were able to reconnect. Im glad you were able to keep on gaming!
Thanks for your and Ross's collaborative games!

Baron's 5e D&D Keep on the Borderlands game went well. Had 5 players and many goblins, a few kobolds and an ogre killed. A few party members sustained lingering injuries due to being knocked out, but no deaths. All characters advanced to 2nd level and there is interest in continuing the one shot and making it a full campaign. Thanks again to allowing me to run this at the last minute and the players who signed up on such short notice!

Just wanted to pop in and say Baron28 made transitioning from 3.5 to 5 almost painless.

Well, for me at least .... my poor dwarf got knocked around quite a bit. ;)

Exceptional DMing was experienced by all that played in the Keep on the Borderlands.

Woke up this morning and one of the players had sent me this in my inbox.

"Just wanted to thank you for running this. It was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the overall uniqueness of the system. Do you use it for longer games? It was perfect for a one shot, but might be a bit lethal for a regular game. Lots of fun, great tension, just a great experience! "

Just put a smile on my dial and makes FG Con worth all the effort put in as a GM. Share the love guys.

Also thanks to my players, was a great game and playing with stars of a show gives a unique feeling when playing even as a GM, it was fun. When Daryl got taken out, it was funny hearing that there would be an uproar from the fan base bringing him back if he dies.

The game I had with Ian Ward in Shadowrun, was top fun and I didn't want to stop, even though 4 hours flew by. So thanks for the game Ian

Just completed my last and final GM session. I had a blast this time again, and I am already looking forward to the next one. I want to thank the guys at Smite Works and all the volunteers who made this happen.

Good job guys, and thanks for letting me be a part of it!!

You now what would be cool, is if this forum supported badges, and we could get badges of what Cons we were at or if we were players or GMs or something. Using BGG as the example.

Thank you to all!
Most especially to the GMs who put in so much time and effort - prepping games, running games, managing players etc.
And also to the players for bringing their imagination, their wit and their devious cunning!

This is feedback I got from players that participated in my games. One for each.

"Just wanted to thank you for the game last night. I went for something different with my character choice and I had a lot of fun, although I was a bit out of my element with the second part, the 2015 woods fun run, I got to contribute with my mad pc skills in the first part and I had a really good time. First time playing Savage Worlds as well, although it was sometimes a challenge with throwing bennies to get same rolls, I really enjoyed the system and hope to play SW again."

"This was so much fun! I literally dreamt about the game all night."

This makes all the prep and invested time worth it

I found FG Con fun both as a player and GM. As a GM, my players did give me some nice compliments afterwards and we had a long 5e conversation following the game . Two of them said they were picking up full ultimate licences.

As a player, it's a great way to test out different games that you haven't played. For me, my goal is to try out two different games other than 5e, which is my main game. I found that I'm really interested in pursuing one of them, and the other just isn't for me, and that's what's great, find out what peeks your interest. Really cool how many different games are available. Next time I will try out two different games and hopefully keep diversifying my favorite hobby.

Agreed - I get to spend one day a year at a Real Life Con and I try to grab 2 games at each FG Con - as much as possible I like to try something I havent tried before or dont play regularly.
It doesnt matter to me too much if it turns out I dont like the ruleset or the game goes awry - its all good experience - and I definitely learn lots as a player to help me GM.
