@damned - You should download the free version of Unity and have a play with the terrain toolkit if your interested in level creation for maps - it offers the same kind of functionality as RPGMaker and its free.

Here's a map I made for Doug a month or so ago as an example of the type of map possible - this one is for a end of adventure boss fight with an evil cleric muahaha .... I'll see if I can knock up a quick wilderness map for you by way of another example. I'll post up here over the holidays.

The 3D assets were imported from various unity packages I have purchased over the last couple of years. The scene took about 20 mins to create - the most time consuming being selecting which 3d models I wanted in the scene and arranging them. The scene itself comprises of circa 90 3d models, one camera (orthogonal view) and various point lights (for the torches). I just positioned the camera overhead looking down on the scene for a quick screenshot so nothing fancy.
