JulioIP - I think Taliz suggests GIMP which I second, but I would also suggest you take a look at Tiled (https://www.mapeditor.org/). Works best if you put all your tiles on one page first in GIMP and then you can race through dungeon creation.

Gimp is a free graphics editing program. But you could use any program that lets you manipulate graphics. I use Adobe Photoshop.

The best way to go about building, is to have a file window open off to one side that displays the map tiles as icons, so you can see what each tile looks like. Then its just a case of dragging the tile to your picture, as most graphics editing programs let you drag'n'drop images into an already open image.

hello all,

Is there a tutorial for setting this up in Gimp?

Since 5E has come out I am putting together a module to DM and I am searching for a good map making tool and this sounds very promising but I have no knowledge in using gimp.

Any help you all can give me would be appreciated or point me in the right direction.

Hello Hendell, I don't use GIMP but I can give you a few basic pointers. The best way to approach map making with the Map Tiles I have released - and this is how I do it - is to first work out how large an area you want to map out. For example a 30ft square map. Next, break this down into 5ft character squares, thus a 30ft square map is 6 character squares along all sides. Now to create your image area in GIMP or Photoshop, multiply the number of character squares along the height or width by 180 pixels to get your image dimensions: thus a 30ft square map, 6 character squares along the height and width is (6 x 180) = 1080 pixels high and 1080 pixels wide. That sets the pixel size of your map.

Most graphics programs have a "snap" to edge or objects feature. So all you need to do is just drag'n'drop each map tile into your image, and align each image so each tile snaps to the edge of ether the image border, or another map tile.

Once you have filled your image with map tiles, just save out the whole thing as a JPG for use in Fantasy Grounds.

I posted this in another thread that was asking about using Gimp with tiles. Hopefully it helps.

Making maps using the tilesets and GIMP works out pretty well.

Determine how many tiles long and wide to make the image
Determine what size tiles you want to use (128, 256, 512) from the Art Kits
Create a new image and size it by multiplying the number of tiles for each dimension by the tile size you are using
Configure the grid in the Image menu to be the size of the tiles
Select show grid and snap to grid from the View menu
Drag a tile from Windows explorer on to GIMP. This adds the tile as a new layer.
Select a portion of the tile that isn't transparent and drag it to the appropriate grid location
Continue the previous 2 steps until you have the basic layout
Use some of the other images to add details to the map

Thank you both for the information, I already got the big tile pack and am messing around in the tiled program Damned suggested. I really like the tiles and hope you continue making them, especially if you make a cavern pack I guarantee I'll buy that on the spot, it would work perfect for the under dark to make them quickly.

I will keep working on gimp as well, if you guys have anymore tips please post them.
