These are very nicely done. I like the whimsical quality to them.
I do have to say that I much prefer the ones without any grids on them, they tend to be much easier to use in FG and the grids are somewhat distracting... but overall these are really nice!

Wonderful! Grids are nice add-on but when maps are used in FG the become obsolete since you can define your own grid in-app. I also prefer maps without grid, but any of your creations are still top-notch no matter you use grid or not

thanks again. i use grids in my personal maps when i run my games, but i only add them to show difficult terrain. different colors for different movement speeds. i then offset the FG grid by one pixel so i can still see my colors. this way both me and my players have a clear understanding of the terrain. however these maps are for the community so i don't add them to any new maps i post.

sukEET - what do you use to add Grids in Gimp?

sukEEt
October 24th, 2014, 09:34
sukEET - what do you use to add Grids in Gimp?

render --> pattern --> grid --> then i adjust the settings (size, offsetting always 0, and color)

you can select an area with any of the selection tools, then go through the above steps to create a grid on only what you select. as long as your offset option is the same, all the separate grids rhat you make will line up.

i also use a new layer for grids so i can move and remove them easily.

hope that is not confusing ...

You might try adding a blue/gray or green/gray or even red/gray tone to one of the layers in these cave maps.. it'll give you a bit more pizazz than the gray on gray.

I just assumed by the way these looks that you did them by compiling multiple layers (3 in this case)... I thought it might be very cool if one of the layers had a different tint to it.
One of the things I've really liked about your maps is the use of simple color.
It is simple enough to tint these images as a whole.. but obviously doing the individual layers after the fact is a bit more complicated.
Here's an overall 'tint' version.

So . . I have had a copy of Campaign Cartographer for years but never really messed with it until a few months ago since I need maps for my 5E campaign. It's been nothing but a headache trying to get it to do what I want and I honestly don't have another few months to get over the learning curve. After stumbling onto this thread I figured I would give GIMP a try since CC was going nowhere for me. In less than 30 minutes (including downloading some extras) I had the prototype of a small old school map up and running in FG and even to the correct # of pixels to make the grid line up.

Now I'm off to find some more tutorials and other goodies to download. :)

To be very honest, I really liked the stuff you were creating in Gimp... I'm sorry to say... this Procreate stuff seems flatter, less fun, somehow. :(
I think it has to do with the line aspect of the Gimp work? I'm not sure.. I'm trying to figure out what my issue is. Those thick black lined slightly abstracted shapes were cool.

Ok, well too bad for you guys ... still learning with Procreate, one can see my maps always improving, just as they did with gimp ... I can just keep them to myself from now on. GIMP is impractical to use. Especially since I work almost 70 hours a week. So as the French say ... Say-lah-veeh...

I don't think anyone is saying your maps are bad, and that we do not want to see them.

I like them, and c'est la vie and no more maps would make me sad.

At first I didn't like that style, but then the more I thought about it, that's pretty clever. Maps with that style would actually look good in print modules I think. It becomes more of an illustration.

I like how this style has developed. I could totally run a "Samurai Jack" themed game with a set of maps like this.

Hey, not bad. It is also pretty useful, but I personally liked a former map style (cartoony wilderness) more than this one. Maybe if more maps are made in the same style, one would get used to it and it would fit a campaign.

Additionally, it would be great to have a set of maps one could use for an adventure, including area map, settlement, specific locations in the settlement and interiors which correspond to each other. There are some maps like that online and I find them quite useful.

Also, I'm trying to get together my first campaign as a DM and it is based on riverbanks, so this map would is ideal for me and it would really be a lot of help, if I could use it, or you could make more like this :)

Keep up the good work.

No, it is easy to output without a grid. I used these with a different viewer for my last session because FG kept crashing ... I already threw out the project file, so I would have to leave out the grid on the next one
