When you run an update they will download that version of Fantasy Grounds and rulesets.

Live is the current release.
Test is the next version release in alpha/beta test. More info here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?9966-Welcome-to-public-testing!
Dev is for use by the developers on whatever project they might be working on.

Only use Dev if the developers specifically tell you to.

Only use test if all of the playing group is using it and you've read the notes in the above link. Test code frequently changes and can break extensions you might be running. It is there to allow the community to test the next release and report issues to help QA before release to live.

Live = Stable release
Test = Beta release
Dev = Alpha / Pre-Alpha release

Dev = Alpha / Pre-Alpha release
FYI - dev can be used by the developers for anything. In the past it has been used for alpha/pre-alpha, one-time hotfix testing, briefly allowing users to roll-back to previous stable releases, etc.. Essentially you can't predict what will be in the dev slot from one moment to the next - so only use it if instructed to by FG devs.
