View Full Version : Looking for AD&D 2nd Ed

A large group of my friends and I have been playing online for a bit using teamspeak and the linking of images with url and drop box.
WE play AD&D 2nd Edition and enjoy playing that game style. I was looking at a few different 2nd Edition rules for Fantasy Grounds but was a little confused as to if they are supported or updated?
My next question would be is there a game set here that is very similar to 2nd Edition that may work nice for us?
I apologize but I am very new to this community.

Castles & Crusades: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.xcp?id=DGA045
It's on sale at the moment! :)
This is basically "Old School" D&D, with the main differences being that AC goes up rather than down (AC 20 in C&C is equivalent to AC 0 in AD&D), and the Siege mechanism was brought in for ability rolls.
Other than that you'll find it very familiar.
The C&C ruleset is fully supported in Fantasy Grounds and gets updates and products added fairly regularly: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/?search=&sys=5&pub=-1&typ=-1&x=14&y=19&sort=1
The C&C Forum can be found here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?62-Castles-amp-Crusades

Castles&Crusades is very much 1st/2nd Edition but with Ascending AC and uses Siege (attribute) Checks for all skill checks that dont have specific class or race skills.
Gary Gygax was working with these guys in his last few years.

So there is not a straight up 2nd edition as of right now? Other than the one some people have made?
Finding something similar would be castle and crusaders then.

Correct, there is a community produced ruleset but it is pretty basic, doesn't have any of the recent bells and whistles and isn't maintained, doesn't have any reference library modules:

Finding something similar would be castle and crusaders then.
I'd recommend using Castles and Crusades - it's up to date, is supported, has reference libraries and will allow you to play AD&D 2nd Ed games with very little modification.

pretty much all you need to do with AD&D modules is switch the AC around.
10=10
9=11
8=12
7=13
..
0=20
etc...
its not AD&D, its not 2E but it does capture most of that feel.

Just as an example, here is a Ghoul in the C&C ruleset, compared with a Ghoul from the unofficial 2nd Ed AD&D Monster Manual:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39085830/Screenshots/Fantasy%20Grounds/C%26C%20Ghoul%20vs%202nd%20Ed.JPG
As you can see, the only real difference is that the AC increases from 10 and there is no THAC0 (as there is no need with an AC that increases from 10).
Ay $7.50 (currently on sale) I'd say have a look at the C&C ruleset, it comes with an included scenario (The Rising Knight) and the whole of the Players Handbook and Monster & Treasure book in FG library format. Absolute bargain!
You can download the C&C quickstart rules from here: https://www.trolllord.com/downloads/pdfs/cnc_qs.pdf

I really thank you for putting the time into these replies makes a huge difference in entering a new community.
I noticed you made mention of a 2nd Ed Monster manual unofficial. Where is this file or where would I find it.. unless it was just a reference.
My biggest issue with the 2nd ed stuff so far is all I have is the rule set I am not seeing a single mod, book or anything else that I can obtain.
I did purchase Castles and Crusaders and a few extra bells. I am going to run this through our players and see what they say...

Wizards of the Coast do not give anyone licenses to use their material other than the 3e/d20 staff they released under the OGL.
Everything else - you are not allowed to distribute - for $$ or free or pizza.
We like to play by the rules here...
Fantasy Grounds includes the 3.5E, 4E and 5E (well at least the rules as known so far) rules but only includes source material for 3.5E because their is no license for the others.
Try this link to get you started with C&C and FG.

It was just a reference: https://www.dotd.com/mm/MM00000.htm

That's what I was referring to when I mentioned that it doesn't have any reference library modules. The main issue with community created rulesets is not being able to include copyright material. The mechanics of a game are not covered by copyright (at least not in North America) and so the game ruleset can be created. But unless there is an agreement with the copyright holders (Wizards of the Coast in this case) additional material can't be included.

I'm here! :)
Yes, C&C is what the OP wants... he'll be able to run his 2e stuff without worrying about conversion to new iteration of the rules, and not worry about the flavour of the in-game environment being changed.
I'm going through a few personal/family medical issues myself right now or I'd offer a demo.
