View Full Version : Irondrake's Maps

Here's a couple of my maps, free for any use. Some I made for specific purposes, some I created for generic encounters. First two I want to toss in here is from the Sunken Citadel. I'm not sure why, but I rather enjoyed that module :) These are rather large images but they work pretty well in Fantasy Grounds. These maps were created in Campaign Cartographer 3.

These are smaller encounter maps I made for Encounters sessions in Photoshop with the GM Art Kit.

I wanted a guard tower...so I made one.

A village entrance...
6851

The Julkoun Cellars..think I actually did this one in GIMP.

D&D Starter Set (5E) region map, my own rendition of it...yeah there's a little error in the text rendering for Kryptgarden, I'll fix it later. This one is done in one of my favorite styles from PärLindström in Campaign Cartographer 3. Actually this is the third time I remade the map before I settled on a style that I felt fit.

nice... Yeah there are a lot of cool styles in CC3. I end up doing the same redoing in different styles.

I did a village for Oakhurst as well...I converted this module to 5E and I'm putting my Saturday group through the Sunless Citadel now. They are in the Grove Level now heh. Anyway, here's the village map...Overall its a very simple map, but I took some artistic license with it...well, cause I could...

And this is for my home-brew campaign, they just finished this dungeon...I called the Pit of Despair...a cult hideout which culminated in an encounter with a slightly beefed up medusa at the end. I was thinking about submitting this one to ProFantasy's cartography competition but I was a little gun-shy and didn't... Sorry about the size, I pulled this one from my google drive map folder.

Here's the D&D Starter Set map with some lair information removed. The original is rather large, I think this one is around half that size.

A small part of a regional map. This one is mostly to show the kind of detail you can get from an overland map in CC 3.

Everyone needs a road! So this a map I'm using for a chance encounter along the Triboar Trail in the Lost Mines of Phandalin, but it can be used as a generic trail for anything really. I just whipped this one together (there's a couple of minor glitches but they don't detract too much).

I have CC3 and I find that I cant get the grid to align well enough with FG. It'll look good for 10-15 squares or so, but any further and the grids disalign. What do you do to make sure the grid aligns correctly?

Irondrake
August 8th, 2014, 04:32
So, aligning grids with CC3 was pretty tough for me at first, I think the secret is how the maps are exported. If you export the whole thing and don't pay attention to settings, its not going to work well for you (or me for many of my early maps!). That map is a bad example. Here is the fixed copy that will align correctly and my method of doing so. You need to know your map size first of all. My map is 200x160. This works best with small battlemaps of course. Large maps and the current version of CC3 do not export well. You have to use another method to export very large images and it almost always messes up your image proportions. A 200x160 image will work just fine though.

I export using Save As Rectangular JPG Section after turning on my layer effects and everything to make it all nice and pretty. The important part is knowing how large you want your square to be when its exported. Multiply by 10 if you want a 50x50 pixel square. 20 if you want 100x100. So I chose 50x50 which is kinda small but makes for a manageable image size. 2000x1600. Set your export options, I selected 2000x1600, 25% AA (any more is a waste of resources and time), 75% JPG. I select the Crop to Aspect Ration option and the Restrict to Image Border option as well. Who needs white space? After that its time to set the region. Instead of using a mouse to select the region, my start coordinate is 0,0. Just type that in. You see it at the bottom of the screen in CC3. Then it wants the ending coordinate. This needs to be exactly 200,160 or whatever your map size is. Its best if its a multiple of 10. You want this grid to line up. If you did everything right your map should come out to exactly 2000x1600 with a grid at 50 pixels. When you get it into Fantasy Grounds pick a square, zoom in REAL tight a grid square and then set your grid to match, 50x50 on top of it. It should be pretty exact. When you zoom back out, you will have a grid that lines up exactly...or at least within one line. No one will notice.

Here's the fixed map that lines up. Hope that was moderately helpful ;)

As I am pretty new to CC3 I really appreciate the rundown on how you set it up for export. That should save some time and frustration!!!

OH, and the maps look great BTW!! Keep them coming.

Its been a little while since my last map, this one is rather massive, so I am posting it at 50% (50 px per 5' instead of 100). Its still very useable. The Ruins of Thundertree. I worked on this one off and on over four or five days. I had to work out a new technique or two for it. The Dundjinni forums were a great help in that department ;)

And one from Hoard of the Dragon Queen...with some intentional omissions, The Sword Coast...

This is a massive map, took quite a while to recreate. If any 'Realms fans notes any glaring errors, let me know! I found some on the original map and tried to correct to the best of my ability.

I really like this, however I wish there was a "HUGE" version of it that included some of the smaller detailed areas

Such as:

aww, no phandalin from the starter's set? I started to like the place :'(

and the mere of dead men (just to the south of leilon) is fairly decent in size, isn't it?

the mountains heading east from Leilon are the Sword Mountains, and Kryptgarden Forest is nestled between them and Westbridge.

The hills between Neverwinter Woods and Longsaddle are the starmetal hills.

I realize this map has been made time and time again, but honestly I prefer your take on it. And even without the things I mentioned off the top of my head, it looks great.

Irondrake
August 28th, 2014, 15:29
All of those things are edits that are in the works, well I can add Phandalin...I hadn't considered putting that one in there :). I realized I missed a few village labels and a couple of geographic features. The map posted is 75% of the size with resolution scaled back a bit to keep file size down. I can upload two versions when I'm done. One for the forum and a larger one hosted elsewhere if it's preferred.

Been a bit, one of my campaigns ended and switched directions. I'm still running D&D 5E with the other though :) Here's a few Science Fiction styled maps I've done for my Savage Worlds game. Maybe they can be of use to someone else as well. I'm pretty sure most of these that need a grid are 100 pixel/5' (or 1" for SW). They were done in Campaign Cartographer 3 (Cosmographer add-on).

I needed a map of a galaxy far, far away...and of course I decided I should use my own, so I made it....based on reference from Fantasy Flight Games. I think the grid is a bit off and there may be some planets that aren't labeled. There are WAY too many planets.

8501

And the players needed a ship to fly through the galaxy...

8502

And what they are hoping to leave behind...

I'm not claiming accuracy here, just some props for our Star Wars game, maybe they will come in handy for someone else :) I'm working on some Ryloth stuff for "Episode II".

Yeah but I can zoom in real close to any section of the map and grab what I need without it pixelating :) That was the main reason for the remake. Those were all done in CC 3 :)

Thats ok - we are running the next FG Con in April - its not yet open for registration but dates have been announced. If you think you might like to have a try of Fantasy Grounds this would be a great opportunity. Feel free to register at https://www.fg-con.com and well send you (by way of a newsletter) more details later this month.

Im sure Irondrake is happy to see his maps being used everywhere :)

An encounter map for the Bears and Bows encounter. Sized to 100 px per 5'. I left the grid intact on this map as it should match up nicely in Fantasy Grounds. I haven't tested it yet, but I've used the same export method that I typically use to make a grid-matching map from CC.

I have a couple of more maps that may be of interest. The first is a reference map of the planet Onderon. It's pretty barren but for Iziz and a few symbols depicting resources and ruins. My players aren't likely going to go digging deeper into the planet by the time I'm done with them :bandit:

12846

Next is a simple system map that's going to be used for a starship battle. I don't like to see a black background with white dots for stars so I try to add a few more details.

12847

Next is a rework of the Galaxy map. It's a bloody monster, very busy, but my last attempt was based on FFG's map and I didn't care for it's orientation.

I typically start on a map when I feel I have a need for it. Eventually the Moonshaes will likely come up because I enjoy that area quite a bit. I'm not sure about the entire continent, it's quite large and I feel other mappers may have done it quite well already.

Hello, A friend of mine and I are both new Fantasy Grounds Unity users. We both have Ultimate accounts. I created a map using CC3 that I brought into my Fantasy Grounds account as a JPG and then took the time to add the grid and the dynamic lighting (love it!). I'd like to share this map with my friend so that he can use it in his campaign. I could just send the JPG and then he could redo the dynamic lighting, but I'd like to save him some time.

Is there a way for me to send this map to him with the dynamic lighting applied?
