May as well start a thread of ideas here. Ill start

In a clearing, in a forest there is a massive stone pillar. It supports nothing and no other ruins are nearby. Something has worn a ring in the stone around the top of the pillar. Carved into the base of the pillar is a message in an ancient language. For any who can read this most ancient of languages its says "Anchor Pointsmouth"

The sun is directly overhead in a large village surrounded by ancient trees. The single dirt lane is deserted as the villagers take their midday meal. The sleepy silence is broken by a wordless roar of rage, then a woman's scream. The cries come from the village church. Lightning from the clear sky strikes once, twice - hitting the run down sanctuary.
