Im watching the tutorials now is there anything specific i should know before i dive in with my players for a c&c game? or is everything about the same as the 3.5 tutorials?

Its not exactly the same... but it its similar.
I ran some player and GM intro sessions at FG Con and used the Castles&Crusades ruleset for my sessions.
What timezone (please use UTC) are you in and I might be able to give you a quick run down?

im just watching the plain tutorials and i'm getting the jist of it. Im in China i doubt we'd match up well for time haha but thanks for the offer!

I'm using the character creator... is there no way to have weapons drag and drop or do you just type them all out? same question with classes etc...does the character sheet not manage this automatically or is it just like writing it out yourself?

FOr instance can I just pull over fighter and select a weapon specialization, and roll hit dice and have that added up automatically? Can I add a sword to my inventory and have the game know what dice to roll for it, or do I manage it all?

thanks

have a few more questions too. On character creation, Im able to create new weapons and list them (still cant link them) but Im not able to create spells.

From the GMs perspective, I can't seem to share the combat tracker or target enemies

Also how can I stop players from being able to request moves with NPC tokens? ANy help is appreciated. I'll be back for more! hah

thanks guys

@Verbalcody - Im in Aus - so the timezone isnt as bad as you might think.

So... you can definitely drag items from PHB into the Inventory sheet.
Weapons will auto add to Combat sheet at that point

There was a "tween" version of Castles&Crusades that was being developed as v3beta that had more automation - eg you wrote fighter down in your class and half-orc in your race and it added your abilities, required experience, languages - but it was stopped and the ruleset was rewritten to layer on CoreRPG. Its a more basic ruleset in many ways but it gets all the goodness of CoreRPG and that ensure it has the ability to stay updated far more easily... yes - lots of automation was lost - it can be added in by some bright spark (as in someone much cleverer than I) but Im prettyhappy with what we have today.

the devs working on v3beta are much happier that it went this way so Ill take their word on it...

i dont use weapon specialisation so cant comment on that one... probably just edit the weapon using teh magnifiying glass and add mods in their or create an effect and apply it to the character...

swords know how much damage they do - as do axes and crossbows and all manner of other weapons.

whats this linking thing with weapons you cant do?

as the GM you dont share CT - the players can view it anyway - you can use Options to modify what/how stuff is displayed there - eg show NPC/Monster hitpoints or just health

you can lock tokens so players cant move them or you can just whack them with the bad luck stick or the ugly stick every time they move things they are not meant to.

you're the man thanks for all the help.

so on my character sheet creator I open the handbook, click equipment, list equipment, then i see the armors and shields, weapons etc. they are all bold, but i can't drag any of them to the character inventory. Must be missing something. Also I'm having a whole other problem now when loading the character i was working on i get this

Ruleset Error: windowcontrol: Database type mismatch for control (hp) in windowclass (charsheet_main)
Ruleset Error: windowcontrol: Database type mismatch for control (ac) in windowclass (charsheet_main)
Ruleset Error: windowcontrol: Database type mismatch for control (initiative) in windowclass (charsheet_main)

No idea what is causing it.

Still trying to work through this all

also can't seem to get targeting to work in the combat tracker

damned
May 16th, 2014, 14:53
hey Verbalcody - first up something is wrong so close everything and rerun the updater making sure that you have entered your forum username and password in (or did you get this from steam - then clear your DLC and redownload) and update.
you should not be getting so many errors...

for encounters try this: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Encounters

damned
May 16th, 2014, 14:58
crap - you said targeting - try this: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Tokens#Targeting

drag character portraits from top left of screen (after player has selected them) into combat tracker.
drag monsters/npcs from personalities tab into combat tracker - or populate and encounter as per above mispost
drag tokens from combat tracker onto map
this keeps the relationship/link between character sheet / combat tracker / map token

when you click your source (attacker) token make sure it highlights white - if grey click again until white - then control click the target (defender) to create the targeting affect.
if when you roll your attack now (by clicking on the ATK field in the character sheet or the weapon name on the combat tracker for monsters) it only shows attack and dice roll and not success/failure you have to delete your corerpg.pak from rulesets and download again - otherwise it should do all the funky calculations for you and declare HIT!
then you can roll damage dice by double clicking them too...

im off to bed now - but more later

I did try re installing, and clearing local data, no good. Posted on the steam forum too so we'll see what's wrong there

I can target now thats great, thanks! But I still can't attack. The monster attacks just say Attack: weapon. Cant cloick it. Still cant use any weapons from the book, dunno why. Assuming this is where everything is supposed to be clicked? In 3.5 this works, but here it does not

JohnD
May 16th, 2014, 16:34
You need to edit the creature and type in an actual attack.

Long Sword +3 (1d8+2), Short Bow +2 (1d6)

For example... will give you two fields you can click on to attack and then roll damage if hit.

Also wonder if you are working with the most updated version of C&C rules. You can't drag/drop to creatures but you should be able to drag every weapon and equipment entry to a character's inventory tab and have appropriate entries on the Combat tab auto populate.

Verbalcody
May 16th, 2014, 16:55
Thanks johnD, I completely removed everything and reinstalled from scratch, books are updated now with those links. Dont know what the problem was before. STILL can't create a character. Have the monster attacks working now with your advice, but can I not just drag long sword into the box or must it be typed?

Anyway I can create a character with a local host connected to my campaign, but not with the character manager. Posted about it in steam forum so we'll see what they say there. Everything else is working great now. You guys are the best

Do spells have to be set up in the same way? A wizard with spells in his book, say magic missile, do i create a 150 ft d4+1 ranged combat attack then manually tick my spells as cast or is there a better way?

last question for tonight haha

Make sure you place the NPC on the combat tracker and drag the token from the NPC entry on the combat tracker to the map. This will link the token to the specific entry and allow things like targeting, damage applying, etc..

To stop players moving NPC tokens, change the NPC "faction" on the combat tracker to neutral (yellow face) or unfriendly (red face). Players can only move friendly faction tokens or tokens added to the map that aren't linked to a combat tracker entry.

For NPCs this must be typed. NPCs don't support item dragging.

Frankly you'll get better answers to your questions here - there are a lot of people with years of experience using the software and the vast majority of us are ready and willing to help! :)

For Magic Missile you should be able to drag the spell over to the appropriate tab on your character sheet from the PHB. I make a custom weapon entry called Magic Missile (duh) and the appropriate damage.

We ought to get together and create a spells module that lets all damage inflicting spells as weapons so they can be dragged in as weapons to facilitate spells in combat.

I got my character creation stuff all sorted, my mix of steam and non steam files were giving me grief and i needed to wipe it all and download it all again to one folder

i couldnt seem to drag and drop spells to the combat area (weapons ok, spells no) but making a custom entry worked well. I have 3 new users to fantasy grounds who i made buy licenses so i just want the playing side to be easy as it can for them. Ill check again when i get home if i can drag spells, makes it much easier

thanks so much for all the help i'll probably be back with more questions since my first session is on monday and im still trying to manage to learn and run a campaign at the same time

You need to drag spells to the spell tab, not the combat tab.

More info available in the C&C User Guide in the wiki: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/User_Guides

The character sheet is covered here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/CnC_Character_Sheet

yeah, i dragged them to the spell tab but from that tab you cant seem to use them in combat? or can you?

damned
May 17th, 2014, 07:33
No you cant - spells are largely just informational.
The character sheet tracks spells known, prepared and used and you can click the spell entry to read the description but there is no automation for spells.

Combat effects for spells (AC adjustment, extra damage, etc) are applied as effects in the combat tracker.

@Verbalcody - I have just created 3 short (4mins or less) videos. I know you have moved past this stage but I will add some more over the next week or so. They will definitely be aimed at "getting started". I will keep them all short so that you can access only what you need each time. Let me know if you think these will be useful to others getting started.

Excellent videos/tutorials! Highly recommended.

Thanks John.
I opted to go with as short as possible videos on a single topic each.
Can watch one or more as needed.
I didnt do voice - hopefully it doesnt need it - but can do if it would be better.
Only been doing this for one day so learning as I go - in video 5 I realised I could use all the black space to the left and right of the videos for my comments instead of putting on top of the graphics....

I think the next videos will be:
Encounters
Pins on map
Sharing Content with players privately
Effects

Completely open to suggestions.

The videos are nice and short - they cover a pretty small subject each time but that subject often overlaps a little with other subjects. If you watch the video and do something similar in Fantasy Grounds at the same time it will probably take you 2-3x the video length and you should have that knowledge tucked away for future use.

The long format video is already well served and seemed like too big a task for me.
I thought single topic videos were easy for me to make and easy for people to watch just the bit they needed.

The last 3 videos have Voice and display more FG screen realty.
Do you think I should go back and redo the first 8...? I wont be in any hurry - but wouldnt mind your thoughts - are the text only or text+voice better?

Do you have any other topic suggestions? Once I do Effects (once I get my head around them) I think that the GM series might be about done for now...
