Anyone with my more image skills than me able to make the grey background transparent?

If I try in GIMP it makes most of the face partially transparent too.

Guessing that is a scan from the Action deck?
Assuming you are using the 'Magic Wand' or 'Fuzzy Select Tool'; what you want to do is under "tool options" adjust the 'Threshold' (other programs call it the tolerance), the lower the number the more discriminating it is between the difference of the source pixels and those that are selected, I generally start out at somewhere around 15 to 25 depending on what I am working on. The more similar the background and the contents you want to keep, the lower you want to start out at.
My other suggestion, especially in cases where you get a "weave" pattern in the image is to run a strong blur over it to lessen how much they stand out. This is the same image as above with a blur run over it at about 65%.

in posting these we all seem to have ended up with a black background if you "copy image" so right click on teh image and choose "save image as" for a better result.
I just used fuzzy select at default of 15. the background color is very consistent i think 5 would have worked too.
You can also "grow" selection by 1px to remove some of the edge bleed around the hat.
