I remember a while back there was mention that FG might at one point go with a new engine, namely Unity. If such is still being considered, then I would like to throw out another contender: Leadwerks (https://www.leadwerks.com/).
This engine has been recently released on Steam and has Steamworks integration. But best of all, the ENTIRE engine can be accessed via Lua (Indie Edition, $99) or Lua + C++ (Standard Edition, $199).
Given the prominence and integration the engine places on Lua accessibility, this would be a fantastic opportunity to easily support custom + paid rulesets and overall modding.
Moreover, it is strictly OpenGL, so direct compatibility with Windows, Mac, and Linux will be a huge boost for FG.
However, however, however... the minimum requirement is that your OS + hardware MUST support at least OpenGL 4.0. This might be a problem. But, if SW can work out a deal to get access to the source code, there might be a possibility to add code for OpenGL 3 support (for example, using the previous version 2 of LW).
I have purchased a license for LW and had a chance to dabble with it and can first-hand tell you that I think this would be a great investment for something like FG (provided the minimum requirements satisfies the user base for FG). They are currently working on releasing a demo, so I would highly recommend you guys at SW to check it out.
