This is an interest check.
Would anyone like to play in a Gurps:Prime Directive Game.
If there is interest I would probably run this in the New Year.8pm to 11pm UK ( GMT).

We would start with a Federation Prime Team but I have a scenario for a Klingon Dagger Team.
I am staying firmly in the SFU so we won't be meeting Kirk and co who inhabit a different parallel universe.

I think I can count on a couple of the guys who do the game I currently run on Wednesdays so we might have the makings of a good team.

I will bung something up on the calendar and I would hope to start at the beginning of January.

I'll be in, either Federation or Klingon - or even Romulan if you want to do a Tal Shiar strike team

I'd be interested as well. I haven't played Prime Directive yet, but I used to play Starfleet Battles, so I'm familiar with the universe.

I still get my SFB stuff out on the garden table sometimes and have a bash. Although I knew some SFB players who were really into it and very skilled I was more of a dabbler. Have you tried Federation Commander-they made an SFB-lite from the Cadet ships with high production values-worth a look. I also like the FASA combat simulator. It is quite difficult porting these games into FG-marking off the boxes on the SSD with a mouse is finicky but I may have another go.
ADB have modified their deal with Mongoose recently so not sure when we'll see the Mongoose Traveller PD books but I am pretty comfortable with GURPS.

I have run gurps PD many times in fg shouldn't run into any issues. as well currently running a traveller gurps game third imperium

I didn't get to play SFB very often (it can be a complex system for some to understand) but when I did, I always had a blast. I once played out a 12 hour long battle with X-ships, but lost that one due to mental fatigue (I was attempting to saber dance with bolted plasma torps with my Firehawk-X and miscalculated my cloak activation, wound up at range 5 on the centerline of an ISC X-cruiser, not pretty). GURPS is the roleplaying game I'm most familiar with, I'd play in anything GURPS right now.

This is all very promising guys.
So let us kick off with a Federation Prime Team.
I was thinking of setting this about Y170-a teensy weensy bit before the General War breaks out.
Can I just ask:
Would any of you be familiar with:

Prime Directive One
PD 1 Graduation Exercise
Gurps Module Prime Alpha for Gurps 3rd edition PD ?

thanks

Not familiar with: GURPS, prime directive, SFB universe. I've got the Intro to the Universe for the latest Prime Directive.

I have the FASA game, which took place in the actual Star Trek universe.

I was a bit bothered that this would collide with the other game I had signed up for with Valarian, with him here I think I am ok. :P My knowledge of ST is limited, I have lots of ST Next Gen and Deep Space 9, but not much of the info did stick. I am fammiliar with GURPS 4e (GM'd it a couple of times). I have GURPS 3e somewhere, though I mostly read thorugh it, never gave it a spin though. So you talking about timelines and diffrent years and wars... It mostly floats above my head. So you could say my ST knowledge is fairly basic.

Depending on timing I'd be interested to get in on this.

How would you run the sessions, text only or over voice?

Do you have a planned end to the game or is it open ended?

This won't clash with Valerian's games -I am playing in those on Fridays and Sundays. My plan would be a weekday evening but not Friday. So Monday to Thursday.
I don't use chat in my games ,mainly because the PC is in the lounge and my family would find that disturbing.
You don't need to be overly familiar with the Star Fleet Universe -I can send you the free pdf that the designers distributed a while back but if you are fond opf the source material ( the original tv show) you won't go far wrong.
In terms of the FASA ships we may or may not see those in the game .In SFB equivalents the Movie era ships are probably all X ships -the Enterprise refit would be and if you check out the USS Vincennes in SFB she is pretty much the ST:TMP ship .
My favourite movie era ships are the Reliant and the Enterprise B.
I also like the Chandley but do you think that it is basically the back end of a D7 with a fed saucer section welded on?

Unfortunately those times will not work for me. :(

sclose1970
December 22nd, 2013, 15:24
I liked the Chandley as well, but I think it's because it was kind of a "Enterprise Lite" ship. I'd agree with the thoughts on how it looked, but it wasn't the worst looking one of the FASA designs. The ones in the Next Generation Officer's Manual win that prize, IMHO. I liked the design of the Reliant, but the FASA stats seemed a bit strong for my liking.

As far as the GURPS game goes, I'm open for any night of the week. The only thing I know about my character so far is that he'll have the quirk "Confused about why people tell him not to wear the RED shirt."

Hmmm, well weekdays doesn't work that well for me. I need to go to sleep about the time the game would start.

I suppose we can look at Saturday night.

December 24th, 2013, 02:16
Saturday potentially interferes with a game I GM. My game starts on Saturday 11pm GMT, so I would need to finish exactly then and I'm not sure I want to sit in front of the computer for your session and then go directly into mine. :/

borusa32
December 24th, 2013, 18:32
So-its either a week night or a Saturday night and either way one of us cannot do it. Oh well-I guess I'll pick one of the options.
I will put an entry on the calendar shortly.

If it makes the decision any easier, then I'll step down. I'm involved in plenty of games already, and I'm not too keen on text only. Many thanks for your consideration.

Ok,well I will hopefully do a one-off of this too at the next FG Con if this all works out.

Any idea when you'll be ready to start? Are there any things you'd like potential players to brush up on or be familiar with in particular?

borusa32
December 29th, 2013, 08:36
I would like to start on Saturday 4 January with a character selection session.
We can go two ways-create your own character or selection from pregens..
I will put up some stuff on Google Plus so will need people to e mail me their details.

I am on [email protected].

So can you give me an idea of what sort of character you would like to play?

1. In terms of races would you like to be a human-either a terran or an Alpha Centauran;
or an Andorian,a Tellarite,a Vulcan.
Perhaps you would like to play a Pellarian-a kind of stocky humanoid alien very adept at engineering.
Maybe a Deian-a race of ethereally beautiful humanoids with high IQ.
The Rigellians are tall humanoids with an almost religious obsession to spread peace through the galaxy.
The dark eyed Cygnans are brilliant at mathematics and physical sciences.
The Myneini resemble upside down pears with a mass of supportive tentacles making them highly skilled at tasks requiring high dexterity.
The elfish Arcturians are highly skilled at martial arts

2. What training did your undertake?

Will he /she be:

A graduate of Starfleet Academy-an officer and a gentleman
A graduate of the Federation Marine academy-ditto
A graduate of Marine Boot Camp-an enlisted non comm
A graduate of Merchant Marine academy-officer
A graduate of Marine basic training-enlisted

There are lots of enlisted marines and personnel in Starfleet and not everyone wants to be an officer.

3. What role does the character fill in the game?

The following list of examples is not compulsory but may illustrate your character's professional skills when not assigned to a prime team or perhaps this is what the character started off doing before getting assigned to Prime Team duties:

Communications Officer
Damage Control Technician
Helm/Navigation
Medical assistant
Medical Doctor
Operations Officer
Propulsion Engineer
Science Officer
Special Forces Training
Transporter Operator
Weapons/Tactical Officer

I guess it's a cliche of TOS, but I'm surprised that security (red-shirts) isn't listed in the professional skill list. I was actually thinking of playing a detective type character, with investigative skills, which I guess would fit into the security mold, but it doesn't seem to fit neatly into any of the listed professions/positions. I would figure such a skill set would be helpful considering some of the missions Prime Teams are tasked with. The Federation book lists a Federal Marshal, which is close to what I envisioned, maybe an ex-Marshal, maybe combined with the Weapons/Tactical Officer skill set if "security" isn't considered an important position. I'll probably be human. Is it necessary that we choose one of the Academy/Camp training templates?

Valarian
January 2nd, 2014, 11:42
I think either a Vulcan Starfleet officer with Science or Helm/Navigation background.

borusa32
January 2nd, 2014, 20:21
We have a pilot so Ian could be a Vulcan Sciences specialist.Have you any preferences for one major and two secondary science subjects?

I quite like the ex space cop idea for sclose. I think that some form of placement/personnel exchange or secondment is entirely reasonable

Valarian

I think perhaps Chemistry and Exobiology.

Do we need the FG 3.0 update installed to play? Does the GURPS addon work with that?

Yes,whenever the GM updates his version the players will need to as well. Seems ok with the update.

So next Saturday for the third episode of this. I have decided to incorporate the buying success rules in a limited way which I think we can play with. I found an online printing service as I really wanted a print version of Ultra Tech and stupidly didn't buy it when it was going at RRP ( and not about a hundred quid on ebay).

sclose1970
February 24th, 2014, 14:35
Sounds good, I haven't had a chance to try out those rules, but I thought the whole Power-Ups 5 Impulse Buys was full of cool ideas. I'm fine with just the basics though.

borusa32
February 28th, 2014, 08:03
I'm just sticking with the optional rules on p 347 in the basic rules. I like the power up stuff too but it is a bit like the compendia rules in 3rd edition-not sure I ever applied any although liked some.
